Bands selling 'meet and greets'

XHonusWagnerX - 1-17-2008 at 09:50 AM

I just got this email from the Megadeth mailing list and they are selling the oppurtunity to meet the band. Im not sure what it would cost to just get a ticket to the show, but it cant be more than $50 and the meet and greet package is $275!!!!

Ive seen other celebritys doing this too. Who the fuck do these people think they are?? I have no problem when its for charity, but this is really lame!!

Plus for the Megadeth one there are lame restrictions about what you can bring and what you can do.

- You cant get any Metallica stuff signed
- You cant bring a camera!
- You get one photo with the band taken by their photographer. Thats means its a cheesy digital print.
-Limited to 40 packages??? Thats $11,000 the band makes for just being fucking decent people to their fans!

Backstage shopping? WTF?

random - 1-17-2008 at 11:15 AM

Hmmm, not sure about Dream Theater, but here's my guess for the others... when you blew a few million either up your nose or in your vein (or both) at the height of your band's popularity, you still have to find a way to maintain that rockstar standard of living into retirement... hence selling "meet & greets".

Speaking of, I was watching the Megadeth "Behind the Music" on youtube the other night... those guys were a fucking mess.

BDx13 - 1-17-2008 at 11:19 AM

this is what happens when you download music and artists are forced to get creative about how to make money on the road.

actually, ticketmaster has been offering premium "VIP" packages like this for some time, although i think the meet and greet part is new. used to just be better seats, a special program, signed cd and a drink or something.

Even for people that agree with that being a justifiable reason for them to charge, I really cant see them charging THAT much money. I remember meeting Megadeth for free at a Strawberries store when 'Countdown to Extinction' came out and all I had to do was wait in line for 2 hours and buy the CD.

Voodoobillyman - 1-17-2008 at 11:53 AM

I would consider this for Motorhead......and thats it.

panzerkreuzer - 1-17-2008 at 12:01 PM

where´s the kiss meet and greet. normally they´re the first with such ideas.

JawnDiablo - 1-17-2008 at 12:05 PM

that's insane.
My buddy bought a cd when he went to see High On Fire at the TLA a few months ago and the dude seling it was like, do you want to come hang out? he went and hung with the band and talked about guitars and crap. apparently they were real nice dudes too,
paying for the oportunity to meet dave mustaine? what does he cure cancer with his fretting hand or something?

sure... but that's when people people still bought cds. :)

i understand your point, but bands are trying creative ways to make money now that cd sales have been in decline year after year. look at what they're offering... that cost of that poster and shirt and buffet shit probably totals like $12, so it's a huge profit item for whoever is organizing it. and to be fair, it's certainly not the band. like everything else, i'm sure this is managed by someone else and they get a cut.

and honestly, i'm not a big dream theater fan, but there are some bands i'd pay three bills for a front row ticket to see. for some people, shit like that is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and that is who this is marketed toward.

JawnDiablo - 1-17-2008 at 12:09 PM

blah I got to drink with the Joe Coffee dudes at CBGB and I didn't even pay to get in...this crap is all madness now that I actually read it

when I was a kid you could go to the bar across the street from the Tower Theatre and chances are you'd be able to meet bands that were performing because they went there for dinner beforehand.
Alice Cooper was a real nice dude.

If Thorp put out our new EP next month I have been authorized to give up to 4 free Plutonium Packages to staff working at the label. Its something you can tell your grandkids about.

defstarsteve - 1-17-2008 at 12:22 PM

well....
back in my day of working road shows, and dealing with rock star pricks,
the meet and greats were not free....
you wanted to meet the band you brought ass or grass.... a nice looking girl or a nice bag...
and you had to know someone either with the booking agent or the tour package to get the goods delivered
and of course those people needed a taste as well...

this is why I was drawn more to punk
no rock star attitude, no stages, the people in the crowd are the people playing the music, no bullshit...

as long as you put people on a pedestal they will expect to be there

we are a culture that has only 8x10 glossy heros...
these people have done nothing to deserve this kind of treatment yet get it showered upon them...
for what?
playing guitar, writing a few lyrics, being in a movie or tv show...
and then they give themselves awards and people watch that crap too...

while our veterans are getting their benefits cut
police are shot and killed in the street (not that I like cops but fucking getting killed for a 30 grand a year)
firefighters....

we are a country with no heritage and there is no one to look up to but backstabbers, theives, liars, and rapists.

at least oj is in jail for now

upyerbum - 1-17-2008 at 01:14 PM

It would be worth the 275$ to punch him in the face. We have a long tradition of punching "rock stars" out around here. Self-important douchebags. If this was for charity I can see it, but holy fuck, come on, hang up your fucking instruments and join the lecture circuit, you could talk about coffee.

MikeCore - 1-17-2008 at 01:16 PM

This has NOTHING to do with downloading just greed. Bands have always made more money touring then from selling records unless maybe you where The Beatles.

Discipline - 1-17-2008 at 01:30 PM

I remember a couple of years ago reading about clubs paying Paris Hilton $100,000 to come hang at their club for a night and drink for free because it would draw people to the club and make it a "cool place to be." Fucking disgusting.

newbreedbrian - 1-17-2008 at 01:46 PM

that's beyond weak. and i met motorhead for free already anyways :singing:

Kiss has done it. Ive gotten emails offering it before, but I couldnt find the list or price online anywhere.

JawnDiablo - 1-17-2008 at 02:53 PM

I met The Bad Vibes a couple times...even got on their tour bus...the bass player had these weird looking groupies....

CR83 - 1-17-2008 at 03:11 PM

My sister just paid to meet Paul Stanley at an art gallery here in STL. Then her and her husband paid $1,500 for a copy of one of his paintings.

Jason the Magnificent - 1-17-2008 at 04:54 PM

Pay hundreds of dollars to get up close and personal with sweaty men after you've been packed in an aeran with other sweaty men for 2 hrs....sounds like a sweat deal.

Funny you say that I saw something on TV before New Years saying some Las Vegas club was paying her 500,000 just to host it.

All of this is bullshit. Any band that does this should be shot in the fucking face with a 12 gauge.

XnMeX - 1-17-2008 at 07:14 PM

I'm glad my favorite band is Blood for Blood because to attend a "meet & greet" just meant standing by the bar.

clevohardcore - 1-17-2008 at 08:02 PM

This is more truth than most people care to realize.

Plus... Truth is, I dont really understand what the fuck everyones bitching about. They can charge twice the amount, if people are willing to pay for it, so be it. If you're not gonna pay that amount, its easy, dont go. Some other poor schmuck will do it. If the band is happy, fine. If the fan who blew several hundred dollars is happy, its ok by me.

That would definitely be a part of the Motorhead package, along with picking up skanks together.

I just think its shitty. They wouldnt be famous in the first place if it wasnt for fans and now they put themselves on such a high pedistal that they will charge people hundreds of dollars for a handshake and a glorified poloroid picture.

JawnDiablo - 1-18-2008 at 09:55 AM

Dave Mustaine is a washed up douche.
Last good record was Peace Sells in 1986.
Fuck him and his coffee. He can blow me.

MikeFromInhuman - 1-18-2008 at 04:46 PM

Awful!
