Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

INSIDE STRAIGHT EDGE on National geographic Channel

THORP - 4-9-2008 at 11:07 PM

Just watched this while downing a bottle of wine and eating a burritto. Actually a pretty balanced documentary on straight edge. Strangely focuse a little too much on Reno Navada, but other than that not bad. Nice to see Down To Nothing and Ramallah tee shirts sported in the documentary.

After talking to Jeff nelson of Minor Threat on the phone last week for a while, it was rad to see MT lyrics on the screen.

Somehow, I felt impassionned about the show even though I was hypocritically drinking at the same time.

I suppose it was because to me, the whole documentary felt more like a one on hardcore than straight edge.

THORP - 4-9-2008 at 11:09 PM

wow. given the spelling typos above, i probably shouldnt drink any more wine

Discipline - 4-9-2008 at 11:42 PM

It's not hypocritical to drink while enjoying something about straight edge. I've spent many nights getting loaded while listening to edge bands.

DaveMoral - 4-10-2008 at 12:03 AM

Was this just on? Playing again soon?

THORP - 4-10-2008 at 12:13 AM

Not sure if it will be on again soon. I just stumbled along on it as it was starting. Pretty cool though. Only guy i knew it though was James from FSU.

Ain't that the truth...

JawnDiablo - 4-10-2008 at 06:52 AM

i was channel surfing last night and BANG all of a sudden Roger Miret's mug was on TV. IFC was playing some thing called Punk: Attitude. I caught the tail end of it with Rollins, Bad Brains, Ray Crappo...who looked rather gay, Jello and some others.
a nice surprise.

XHonusWagnerX - 4-10-2008 at 08:02 AM

I DVRed that last night and will probably watch it today when I get home from work. I found out about it at the last minute so Im glad I got to record it.

Dave - if its not playing again or you cant find it in your area, I can get you a VHS copy if youre interested.

Juan - Ill have to try and find 'punk attitude' and see if I can record that. Side note: the picture in your signature is amazing!!

DaveMoral - 4-10-2008 at 08:30 AM

Juan, I watched that Attitude thing last night. That was pretty good.

Honus, managed to watch the Inside Straight Edge from 1 AM to 2 AM. 15 minutes on "posi" 15 minutes on Elgin James and erroneously making FSU look like a straight edge crew... and then 30 minutes on SLC and (mostly, as Andy said) Reno and the whole "is straight edge a gang." In the end, I thought it was somewhat misleading. Plus some new jacks getting edge tattoos and talking about "straight edge brotherhood" which was gay.

CR83 - 4-10-2008 at 09:10 AM

I DVR'd the SXE deal last night and got up at 4:45 and watched it. I thought it was pretty balanced but still slanted it as a "gang". That was mainly due to the SLC violence stuff and Nevada just being a violent state.

What I liked about it was obvioulsy the music part (Saw Budah from Blood For Blood) on there. I liked how they posed it as "Your suburban kids have come full circle to abstain. Now some of the group have splintered off into Militans". I thought the whole show was rather though provoking.

I will check out the IFC show for sure.

Furly - 4-10-2008 at 10:15 AM

I dig the fact they used the Edge Day show in Haverhill (I'm a Haverhill girl), I have a few friends that helped out on it. I think it came out well, except who knew the Straight Edge was all about gang violence? Maybe I've just been too busy getting drunk to notice.

It's playing again tonight at 1AM.

XHonusWagnerX - 4-10-2008 at 10:23 AM

damn... how do I join the gang??

Furly - 4-10-2008 at 10:28 AM

I think you have to kill someone for smoking a cigarette to show you're down for life.

Apparently, apply x's to ones hands = Done. Never knew I was a gang banger when I was younger. Good to know, I guess.

i may have to get one on netflix if its on there

XHonusWagnerX - 4-10-2008 at 08:00 PM

I just watched the edge documentary. I think it was kind of shitty. I know that it was only an hour (with comercials), but I feel like you have to go back to the start of the 'movement' in each city to show where it came from. They spent like 30 seconds on Minor Threat with NO mention of any other stuff in DC. They spent 15 minutes on FSU (which IS a gang and is probably less than 50% straight edge) and no mention of the original Boston Crew.

To many young kids too... Oh Im 19 with my full sleeve and my brand new sailor style edge tattoo on my kneck. Time to go practice with my ultra stereotypical moshcore band.

TRUE TILL 21!

You lost the edge
and that's not the worst
The sad thing is you're not the first
Our friendship's done, it really hurts
But maybe I could have
All of your old shirts
Your Wide Awake record
and Chung King too
They can't be worth that much to you
Maybe this is not so bad
Because now i own
all the things you had
More friends of mine could start to drink
I could use a new X-watch I think.
You swore you'd be edge to eternity
But now you're pledging a fraternity

Six66Mike - 4-10-2008 at 08:02 PM

Hopefully I'll be able to find this online, so far no dice though.

My thoughts exactly.

If you're going to talk about straight edge hardasses you should at least mention the Boston Crew and SSD. It bothered me just how much the whole Boston Beatdown video was featured...

Then, of course, with the SLC portion they attributed the bombing of a mink farm and the burning of a McD's to straight edge... which isn't even remotely the reason those kids did either of those things. That's called militant veganism/animal liberation. And, again, what are they going to do? Label every vegan a "gang member" because of a few incidents? Patently rediculous. I like how the dude with the "posi" shirt was saying that two things the authorities do when they label straight edge a "gang" is 1) attract people that are looking for gang-banging to straight edge and 2) mud-sling a lifestyle that is... even for so-called militants... very very positive.

XHonusWagnerX - 4-11-2008 at 07:51 AM

I also think it was lame that theyre was a really long segment on Reno and NOT ONE MENTION of 7 Seconds!

Amen to that. But the slant was about the "Militant" side. The only thing 7 Seconds was militant about was being nice to each other.

thats the problem.... to much of a slant on everything in the movie. I think that sxe is to big to do a documentary of the whole thing and try to lable different cities as different things. They should do one on boston sxe, or reno sxe or ny sxe....

mattybar - 4-11-2008 at 12:32 PM

i'd be curious to see this just for the sake of it but from my experience of seeing stuff like this before (there've been quite a few tv "exposé"s of sxe in the UK) they kinda have to focus on the militant angle cos once all is said and done, there's not really a whole of interesting things to be said about sxe.
minor threat..blah...x's on hands was for the underage kids...positive youth...
i mean that's is pretty much.

it's more interesting (and amusing) to read about some numbskulls beating some kid shitless cos he was smoking a cigarette than reading about some kids who eat healthy and don't get drunk on weekends.

kinda like how i like a lot of sxe bands but the best stuff is the militant bands.
i guess it's because sxe can never get that big in the uk cos pretty much everyone is on the fuckin bottle.

its become a runing joke in the uk that sxe kids simply do not last in London.
getting a sxe realted tattoo officially seals your fate over here.
you'll be drunk before the ink dries!

ps - i've still yet to see Edge Of Quarrel but it sounds like it could be the funniest thing ever.
anyone fancy uploading it?

mattybar - 4-11-2008 at 12:35 PM

take note kids, booze and drugs ruin your spelling.

DeathByForce - 4-11-2008 at 12:45 PM

I'd love to see what could be done with All Ages as a documentary. It'd be cool to see old Raybeez footage in there.

That's pretty much how it goes here in the States too.

DeathByForce - 4-11-2008 at 06:37 PM

Edge of Quarrel just came out on DVD not too long ago. If anyone hasn't seen it, it's up on revhq.com i believe.

DaveMoral - 4-11-2008 at 11:42 PM

Can I Netflix it?

tireironsaint - 4-12-2008 at 06:21 PM

I'm surprised to see so much love for that Punk: Attitude turd. I love watching Punk and HC documentaries, but that was probably the worst one I've ever seen.

Discipline - 4-12-2008 at 06:33 PM

Not the woest I've seen. I enjoyed it for what it was, mostly a nostalgia piece.

tireironsaint - 4-12-2008 at 06:52 PM

Nostalgia is fine for those types of movies, this one just seemed poorly done and focused way too much on shitty bands like TSOL.

DaveMoral - 4-12-2008 at 09:24 PM

I don't remember seeing any TSOL in that doc...

tireironsaint - 4-13-2008 at 12:17 AM

You're right, I was confusing it with another one and now it's gonna drive me nuts until I remember the name of that one.

tireironsaint - 4-13-2008 at 12:23 AM

OK, figured it out, I was thinking of Rage- 20 Years Of Punk. Not sure why I had those confused.

Discipline - 4-13-2008 at 02:55 PM

Rage totally sucked. That I can definitely agree with. Fucking terrible.

MikeCore - 4-13-2008 at 04:13 PM

So I'm actually watching this now and I laughed so hard my kidneys hurt. Man the scene has gone straight down hill since '91. The best thing I've heard so far was I believe The First Step. Getting to the militant part now..this should bring the lulz.

bombidol - 4-13-2008 at 04:49 PM

if anyone finds this online let me know

MikeCore - 4-14-2008 at 02:56 AM

Wow, that was a pretty lop sided show. It talked about the history for about 5mins and then focused on the gang/violence/fake metal thing. Pretty lame. I was LOLing and my wife was getting pissed. The FEW redeeming things where a Wide Awake 'CT Hardcore' reprint shirt, a COS 'True 'till Death' reprint hoodie, and I think The First Step. Not that I get to see that stuff on TV everyday but pretty lack luster for me.

DaveMoral - 4-14-2008 at 06:52 PM

I'd be interesting in seeing a straight edge doc shot by straight edgers exploring the whole gamut of the history. Posi, militant, vegan sxe, whatever. And NOT make it completely subjective like "I'm going to tell you how it is and blah blah blah." Like, no posi kids telling people what militants think and what to think about them. You gotta give perspective and let people decide the merits of that shit for themselves.

Why is that XDoaneX guy wasting his time with shitty metal videos instead of doing this sort of thing?

That's nothing. "King Of Punk" is the hands down Punk related documentary I've ever seen. It made me embarrassed to be human and carry it in my store.
