I've been close to that point.
as of recently i just havent been drinking much...until this weekend.
juat been too blah to even drink.
whatever you find that works and makes your life go in a better direction gets my support.

I've been sober for a few months over 19 years now. I used to go to meetings and that was certainly helpful up to a point, I'm just one of those people that the program isn't right for. When I sobered up I used any and every form of support that was available to me at the time. A friend and I sobered up together and and dove head first into Straight Edge, but SxE in the late 80s in central Texas is a lot different than what it is now in any city. I thought my drinking was becoming a problem back when I was about 20. I was in college and drinking a lot. I drank a lot before going there but it was getting bad. I decided to go six months without a single drop of alcohol. I decided if I couldn't do six months then I would go to AA and quit for good. I went six months while living in a dorm, which was no easy feat. I think it was a good thing to do, and I'm glad I did as it put things in perspective for me. I don't drink too often these days. In the last year I've only gotten drunk maybe 10 times, which for me is pretty damn good. I love to drink, but I can't afford it anymore and my body can't handle it.

Not to sound like a prick or anything but can some of you guys give me a rough idea of what your regular consumption of booze was? I mean I dont think I have a problem but I drink reasonably regular and in massive amounts. I'd just like to get an idea of whats considered a problem over your side compared to here.

It got to the point where I'd suck back a 12-pack of beer and a 26oz bottle of whiskey in a night and I was drinking 4-5 nights a week. When I was working nights I'd head to bar for 6-7 before going to work every night. In college I set new records for myself in pure volume as I got to the point where I could drink a 40oz bottle of Jack Daniels in about 5 hours with a few beers tossed in here and there. I was expensive and just stupid. That's why I made the decision to dry out for 6 months. I actually went through a painful first week or two, as my body was craving alcohol so badly.

I've never had a problem with drinking. I've never been big on drinking during the week, or really much at home. When I go out on the weekends I'll have maybe 4, with the slight exception of getting drunk maybe 3 times a year.

I went to a couple of meetings for my mother about 10 years ago. All the people I met and talked to were really friendly. I think it's a great system for those that use it.

I questioned it about 10 years ago. I am not saying I control or beat it becasue I don't but I just said, I don't need to drink all the time. I like it. I enjoy it. I don't want to stop, but I do know to not be an ass and stop when it happens. I've been their on several occasions. So the older I have gotten I seem to grew wisdom somewhere. Besides its a lot of work to get hammered anymore. It's not the same as when I was 21 or 23. Then it was honor to get wasted. It was celebrated. Now with a family and responcibility YOU MUST NOT FUCK IT UP. So I chill anymore.

I realise especially compared so some of the ones I used to kick it with back in the day. Some do not know when to stop and they are showing it. Man are they ever. SO I use that as well as a judgement stick. This is what happens if you get wasted all the time. So I back off.

IF you need the help GET IT. No shame in it. ONly same is when you have the help then don't use it. Get fucked up then ruin things. THATS THE REAL LOSER. YOu are winning if you stop when you know you need too.

Good luck with it bro, I hope you find your answer to peace. I actually have this tour of duty to thank for clearing me up a bit and getting my head right on my alcohol consumption. I feel as though I was teetering and had a good chance of getting caught up in a bad place with the booze. I plan to reasses upon my return to the states as to whether I want to drink anymore at all or not. Life is funny shit.......here is a list of things I had to come to Iraq to acheive:

stopped the drinking
lost monumental amounts of weight (see the stopped drinking)
Got into the best shape of my life
learned to drive a stick shift, yup, I was a cruise-o-matic dude before now
got promoted....finally!

chris, i wish you the best.
for myself i set up some rules. i have no alcohol at home and drink only with friends or when i´m at a show.
before my birth my father was a strong alcoholic, so i have some fear to become some too. but he gave up drinking when i was born and is sober for 33 years now and has all my respect for this.
it´s fun to be drunk, but try not to lose control of it, that´s my advive...
