Murk - 4-15-2008 at 12:32 AM
not ones you liked or bought, necessarily, just heard.
tape, 7", EP, LP...
if you can remember...
20 years ago i heard all these in about 12 months, for the first time.
DRI - Dealing With It & Dirty Rotten LP
Exploited - Let's Start A War
GBH - Leather Bristles Studs & Acne
Dead Kennedy's - In God We Trust Inc.
Suicidal Tendencies - s/t
Toxic Reasons - Independence
Agnostic Front - Victim In Pain
Cro-Mags - Age Of Quarrel
Youth Of Today - Can't Close My Eyes
Bad Brains - Rock For Light
Minor Threat - s/t
looks pretty generic, but back then I was only exposed to what other people i hung with, or knew, had in their collections.
it's crazy when you think about it. back then there was no MySpace, Soulseek, websites with demos or songs you can listen to.
BDx13 - 4-15-2008 at 12:52 AM
token entry
sick of it all
raw deal
youth of today
minor threat
black flag
poison idea
dare to defy
edgewise
pagan babies
skate rock vol. 3 (accused, septic death, coc, gang green, etc. amazing comp.)
you're definitely right about the limited influences back then.
it was all about what your friends were listening to.
hardcore came to me at about the same time from the guys i skated with (who were listening to philly & nyc hardcore bands) and my metalhead friends
(anthrax, coc, etc).
MikeCore - 4-15-2008 at 02:56 AM
Minor Threat - Filler
Minor Threat - Out of Step
Minor Threat - Salad Days
DYS - Wolfpack
SSD - The Kids Will Have Their Say
Youth of Today - Break Down the Walls
Turning Point - Demo
Slapshot - Back On The Map
Chain of Strength - True 'till Death
Warzone - Lower East Side Crew
Voodoobillyman - 4-15-2008 at 03:29 AM
I don't completely remember, but it was alot of the standards from the mid to late eighties
Suicidal
DRI
Misfits
I remember the Return of the Living Dead soundtrack had some great fucking punk rock on it, 45 Grave and shit
The Cramps
Skating to thrash turned into listening to hardcore punk at some point. I loved the time I got to grow up in, imagine being 12 and introduced to what
passes as hardcore now? Damn, I feel sorry for those kids
Not all of these may be considered hardcore, but they gave me "that" feeling, like something important had just landed on my ears.
Six66Mike - 4-15-2008 at 04:29 AM
This is as close as I can come up with:
Victory Records promo tape with Warzone, Integrity etc
Snapcase - Progression Through Unlearning
Hatebreed - Satisfaction is the Death of Desire
Blood For Blood - Revenge on Society
Skarhead - Kings At Crime
I think I had some Black Flag before that since I was into the punk first.
JawnDiablo - 4-15-2008 at 06:27 AM
i'll have to get back on this one.
thats a long time ago
Dave - 4-15-2008 at 08:29 AM

DRI - s/t
Dead Kennedys - bedtime

XHonusWagnerX - 4-15-2008 at 09:01 AM
Hmmm..... I'm going to include records that would probably be called more punk than hardcore too...
Ramones - Ramones
Black Flag - First Four Years
Slapshot - Step On It
Murphys Law - Back With a Bong
Circle Jerks - Group Sex
Dead Kennedys - Give Me Convience or Give Me Death
Minor Threat - Discography
Bad Brains - Live
DYS - Wolfpack
Suicidal Tendencies - Suicidal Tendencies
I dont know if those are the actual first 10, but they are from pretty early on.
Great Thread! Its funny to look at the different lists because you can tell about how old the person is!
MikeFromInhuman - 4-15-2008 at 09:30 AM

I got introduced with kids I skated with too, alot of it was on mixed tapes, so I guess I'll just name bands.
Black Flag, Minor Threat, Suicidal Tendancies, Bad Brains, 7 Seconds, the FUs, Agnostic Front. First local stuff or at least that I realizied was
local were Slapshot and Blood For Blood.
panzerkreuzer - 4-15-2008 at 10:12 AM

spermbirds - something to prove
napalm death - scum
suicidal tendencies - 1st record
7 seconds - the crew
slime - alle gegen alle
lard - the power of lard
emils - fight together for
boskops - lauschgift
ask for my first ten metal albums, thatīs easier!
JawnDiablo - 4-15-2008 at 11:24 AM
I was a metal kid...that skated, so most of the stuff i was turned onto that led me up this dirt road or hardcore may not be considered to be true to
the current definition of such things. but in a nutshell if the PCP from the early 90s hasn't totally fucked up my memory it went something like this:
Black Flag: Wasted Again
The Accused: Marth Splatterheads Maddest stories
Serial Kilelrs: Roadside Rendevous
DRI: 4 of a kind
Suicidal Tendencies: S/T
Misfits: Walk Among Us
Black Flag: Damaged

Spoiler - 4-15-2008 at 02:07 PM
I didn't really know what hardcore was until about 1989...I'm from NC,so there wasn't too many hardcore kids around...I was always into metal before
that.I had No internet,no hc/punk friends, hell I never even heard the term Hardcore...But I do remember the first time I heard it.I rode my bike to a
local music store (Camelot Music) one day with just a few dollars in my pocket, and they had a big bin in the middle of the store with cassette tapes
for like $1.99 or something.I found a tape that had a cool cover called "FREE FOR ALL",it was a compilation put out by Hawker records...it had
Wrecking Crew,Token Entry,Rest in Pieces and No for an Answer...live at CBGB's.After hearing Token Entry do Jaybird and that huge sing-a-long...I was
hooked.I sent a SASE to Hawker Records...and thats how I first started ordering my Hardcore tapes and zines.I started getting catalogs and zines in
the mail every other day.
I guess my first few would be something like this:
Free for all comp.
suicidal Tendencies s/t
Leeway - Born to expire
Biohazard's first album
sick of it all - just look around
COC - eye for an eye or technocracy
DRI - 4 of a kind or dealing with it
Token Entry - from beneath the streets
CroMags - age of quarrel
and alot of 7" and demo tapes of smaller bands
I started getting into punk around the same time, but thats another story.

DI - Horse Bites Dog Cries
Minor Threat - s/t
Pistols - Never Mind...
Ramones - Rocket to Russia
tireironsaint - 4-15-2008 at 10:57 PM
Fuck, that's a looooooooooooooong way back to remember...
I know the first tape I got my hands on that was Hard Core was a homemade cassette with Black Flag on one side and The Big Boys on the other. After
that it's all jumbled, but I know that C.O.C., DRI, Dead Kennedys, Misfits, Circle Jerks, Suicidal Tendencies, and Bad Brains were all in there very
early on for me. I had listened to a lot of Punk stuff before that, but nothing that I would consider HC. I think some of the first things I heard
that turned me onto Punk were The Stooges and The Cramps, then that Black Flag/Big Boys tape blew my mind and I searched out every variation of Punk
that I could find.
