Your Country

clevohardcore - 5-22-2008 at 09:52 AM

Is an overhaul needed? Do you have pride in it. This apply's to everyone on THORP form all countries they reside. What most bothers you about it? How would you change it?

MyOwnWay - 5-22-2008 at 10:22 AM

Voted like. I like the United States for many reasons. I'm not a fan of the politics and the general cultural decline, but I guess thats anywhere.

Voodoobillyman - 5-22-2008 at 10:25 AM

The United States is a great country with great ideals and is extremely young still. There is a shitload wrong with her and she needs a good fixin kinda like a classic auto that just needs some resto.

mattybar - 5-22-2008 at 12:10 PM

England is just great but we seriously need to sort the fucking kids out.
Shit is totally out of control.
I also think the government should introduce licenses for having kids.
If you need a license to own a dog, you should need a license to have a kid.

joemaconmovies - 5-22-2008 at 12:15 PM

i like our country because the conversations we have we could be killed for having in other places. but we're far from perfect and i feel that to make us a good country and to make us stronger, we, as citizens, need to be critical. that's one of the most important things about living here.

edit: sorry, forgot we have people from outside the united states posting here. when i say "our country" i mean the united states

I voted dislike, but I think its mainly because I dont know if I have enough cash to fill my gas tank today and I've been listening to a lot of Larm, GISM, Doom, Discharge etc.

I just think we have a lot of things that are bad and that the country and especially the government needs a REALLY good cleaning (like voodoo said). My problem is that I dont feel like that will happen anytime soon.

Also to agree with voodoo.... the US is a young country which makes me feel even worse. I understand why a 'classic car' needs restoration, but the US is not 'classic' yet so it shouldnt be as 'broken' as it is.... not yet at least.

maybe the classic car metaphor is the wrong kind of metaphor to use. maybe you have to look at the US as a young child who needs to grow up and mature and it takes time to do that. just a thought.

defstarsteve - 5-22-2008 at 01:40 PM

the problems are not of any 1 country
it's a problem of the haves vs. the have nots.... in every country
and those who have it will keep those who dont from getting it....

SHAKO KEN - 5-22-2008 at 04:48 PM

it's alright here (holland)
likes: freedom. cheap college fees. good job opportunities. more than 10 political parties to choose from. not much serious crime. lots of international bands touring.
dislikes: barely any nature, people live everywhere. we should grow some international backbone, the government of the past 6 years has been sucking up to the us way too much. the weather sucks except for summer. not enough good local music. too many gullible people although you'll get that everywhere. they're about to ban shrooms.

If yout think about it the US is "perfect". We have Always had problems throughout the history of this country. To not have problems would be anything but perfect.

dude, to be perfect = no problems. for a country. a country with problems is not perfect.

Murk - 5-22-2008 at 05:35 PM

i like the country and the original ideas for running it.

i don't like the people who currently run it.

Quote:
Is an overhaul needed?

maybe, but if people would step up their accountability and just listen, it would work wonders.

Quote:
Do you have pride in it.

that's tricky for me to answer. do i have a flag bumper stickers/pins/shirts and run around chanting "U-S-A" like a dickhead? no. would i ever deny being from the US? no. would i be ashamed to admit i'm from the US? no. if motherfuckers started trying to invade LA, would i pick up a gun and help fight back? YES.

Quote:
What most bothers you about it?

the slow, but steady removal of choice and the incredible lack of honesty and accountability.

Quote:
How would you change it?

preserve choice, hold people accountable and reinforce the concept that being stupid is not cool.

Even though America has its share of problems, what country doesn't. Sure we need to lower the tuition of college, fix our healthcare system and have better check and balances in our government but checks and balances need to also come from the general population. People need to make themselves aware of what is actually going on. The country itself is pretty god damn good but the majority of America's population are complacent. People need to start standing up and doing something, like people attemped to do in the late 60's and 70's. And if you don't like the high gas prices, then A) Don't drive B) Should've bought a hybrid or C) Use mass transit. You don't HAVE TO DRIVE a gas powered car, you choose to.

In short, I have more of a problem with the general population than the country itself. Mostly the people who are (southern accent here), "a buncha good ole Americans." They blindly follow and support everything our government does.

We are able to speak our minds openely unlike most countries in the world.

you would need a perfect country to use as a base for comparison and there is and never has been one. So our country is perfect because it has always been this way. When an animal is born with two heads is it considered perfect? no, its considered abnormal because it is "not normal" compared to the general population of animals with one head. If our country was to cease having problems it wouldnt be perfect, it would be abnormal as well.

In any sense I took it way to far from the simplicity of the questions and it was a bad move on my part.

To answer the question I would say I am happy with they way the USA is. It could be because I live in the quiet state of Vermont and its pretty easy living and fairly crime free. I haven't noticed any change in my living due to the governments decisions. I try not to follow politics to much because its just one more thing for people (including myself) to get stressed out about.
