I'm going to be doing a phone interview with Brad Logan, lead singer of what was F-Minus. I have never done an interview before and im a little
confused on one key aspect which is recording the interview over the phone so I can type it up later. I feel that writting down his response on
paper or typing it will not be a efficient way of doing this. My friend told me to just get the jist of his response on paper and try to word it as
best as I can from memory but I dont want it to lead to mis-quoting and possible problems. I know some of the people on here have done interviews
for zines and such. Got any advice?

Try using a nice simple notepad and develop some a shorthand. Just tell the guy that you will be writing it down so he doesn't talk too fast.
I have also done it on speaker phone and used a tape recorder.

You can get a tape recorder from Radio Shack or places like that which has a connecting cable that hooks right into a cell phone. I got one for about
20 bucks a while back.

do you have skype or ichat?
you can record the calls out directly to you computer.

it's a device you put between your phone and your handset that lets you run a line out to a recorder.

Go with BD's idea. We used one of those recorder deals at an old company of mine for training. Super easy.

ok, my friend...this has been my low budget interviewing technique...
find a quiet room with no ambient noise, put your cell on speaker phone and keep that speaker as close as possible to a tape recorder microphone. use
a headset or earpiece to monitor the audio.
done it a shit load of times and it is clear enough to hear and transcribe later.
the key is to always monitor while you record so, if something isn't clear, you can have them repeat the question...
