Looking for a new computer...

XnMeX - 6-4-2008 at 10:37 PM

Nothing too fancy. Looking to spend under $500.00 (no monitor).

Any suggestions? I have a Dell now and it's been nice to me, just not powerfull enough anymore and it's only a celeron.

Any good places to get a great deal on desktop computers?

i don't mean to sound like a dick, but i would definitely recommend increasing your budget, even if only by a couple hundred bucks. sub-$500 machines are gonna leave you making the same post far sooner than if you bought a more powerful computer now. ESP if you're doing any gaming.

No gaming, just photoshop pretty much. I don't do a hell of a lot on my machine.

buy a mini mac if you're not looking for a monitor.

700 will get you a pretty damn good computer at BEST BUY. Or go to BEST BUY and ask for floormodels on the really good computers. They always have deals like that. Seriously. YOu could prolly get a 900 computer for around your budget. Seriously just ask.

THis is a link I got today from GATEWAY. It's a discount for fathers day. I don't need it so here ya go. Htey send me shit all the time because that is what I got. I like the GATEWAY and have had no problems. Plus if the computer that you want is not on the front page I believe they have a discount of like 250 off all computers for this holiday. So check em out.

I went to Best Buy and applied for a credit card thru them thinking I wasn't going to be approved..... I got a $1100.00 credit line! So, I picked up a HP with Intel Dual Core, 3gb ram, and 500GB hard drive with a printer (which I don't need so I will see about "returning" it to WalMart for store credit if they have this model" and a 17" flat panel (since I have a 17" old big and bulky monitor) all for $650.00 Not too bad. I don't have the CPU yet because I paid an extra $30.00 for the Geek Squad to go thru the registry and get rid of the crap I don't need and do some other shit to make it run 30-50% faster / better. Picking it up tomorrow which is fine since I still have to go thru this slow piece of shit computer and remove my files I want to keep. I just loaded this thing with WAY too much crap and it is an old Dell Celeron.

that sounds pretty great
3gb of ram...damn
i got 1gb when i got mine 2 years ago and at that time it was more than good.
i feel inferior.

I hate computers because the minute you get a new one there is something WAY better than what you just got for $50 less!

clevohardcore - 6-6-2008 at 07:54 AM

wow. SO its not a laptop. Shit my bad I thought thats what you were looking 4

Dave - 6-6-2008 at 11:02 AM

that was a pretty good deal on your cpu.

i need to buy a video card for mine, that's the only thing i don't like about it. but i just need it for autocad photoshop.etc. i dont game on my cpu (thats what the ps3 is for), so anything will be better than the onboard shared video.....i saw a 1 Gig card on for sale at staples this week i might pick up

here is what i'm running tho.......

intel dual core 2.0
22" LCD
4 G ram
640 gig in drives..
+ 500 gig external..

come on fellow geeks post your stats......

All I know is it kicks ass (or it did 2 years ago when I got it), I told my buddy, "Build me a kick ass computer", and he did.

BDx13 - 6-6-2008 at 01:10 PM

monty - strong configuration and good price. well done.

if you can't return your printer (some companies produce printers that are only used as the freebies), you can flip it on ebay. i did it when i bought my new mac - paid $99, got $99 rebate, sold it for $80.

LordActionWood - 6-6-2008 at 02:58 PM

decent deal for sure.....can't go worng with dell or HP....just get all of that proprietary bullshit off of there and it will run way better.....sound like you already did.

I feel like my high speed internet connection is finally being put to use! This computer is just leaps and bounds better than my old one. Just got it up and going, need to throw a few programs on.

I trasfered all the stuff (music, pictures, videos, documents, etc) from my old computer onto my old computers backup hard drive... It took about 3 hours to transfer a 6GB picture folder onto the backup hard drive on the old computer.... I then put the backup hard drive in a ide enclosure to transfer the entier hard drive contents (about 36GB) to my new computer and it took a bit over 1/2 hour for the full 36GB transfer. SLIGHT difference. lol
