There's probably more on this thread that I like than in general bands listed on the boards. Of course, there's some weird shit in here that I'd never
be caught dead listening to as well, but that should go without saying. From this thread so far, I dig :
Butthole Surfers
Plasmatics
Born Against
Melvins (some)
Rorschach
Neurosis (early)
Jimmy Cliff
and like Brian mentioned, I also dig the Bluegrass and Old School Country. In this town you can't say Bluegrass without people thinking you mean that
abomination sometimes called Newgrass that the hippies out here love. I fucking HATE that shit.
As for bands I really dig that I don't think too many of youse are hip to....
The Detroit Cobras (just saw them play with X on Friday and I'm still knocked out)
Dirtbombs
Jack O Fire
Lord High Fixers
Poison 13
and probably a bunch more I could list....moron - 6-9-2008 at 03:08 PM
Rod Stewart

Pearl Jam

and youre not along in liking Alice in Chains, Juan. I love em. Ive got a soft spot in my heart for alot of that 90s grunge/alternative/etc.
I like Justin Timberlake a bit. My wife and I went to see him on Long Island last year, and we enjoyed it.joemaconmovies - 6-9-2008 at 03:18 PM

The show I just saw was seriously one of the
best shows I've ever been to, top ten anyways. Detroit Cobras on tour with X, no opening bands, no bullshit. Flat out amazing show. Somehow I've
always missed out when X has come around and I feel like I have been waiting forever for The Detroit Cobras to come near me. The only complaint I can
come up with for this show was that I would have been happy to watch the Cobras play for a week straight, so no matter how long they played it wasn't
gonna be enough. X played all old classics and there wasn't a bad song in the bunch, but as amazing as they were, I was too floored by the Cobras to
really be bothered.
As for the Bluegrass stuff, I didn't mean to imply that you were talking about the new hippie shit, just that everybody around here assumes that's
what is meant when the term is used. These ignorant dirtbags don't even know who Bill Monroe is and they have Bluegrass festivals all the time. It's
painful.
Have you ever heard The Bad Livers? they were an Austin band with a Bluegrass style that was made up of older guys who came out of the Punk scene.
They have some old 7 inchers that have them doing Stooges and Motorhead covers Bluegrass style. Fucking amazing musicians. They played some shows back
in the day with local HC and Metal bands and everybody would do chicken fights in the pit, great times.newbreedbrian - 6-9-2008 at 07:45 PM
yeah im a big fan of X too, sounds like a show i would have enjoyed. weird that they're one of those bands that people that like stuff from that era
don't even like. heavy 50s rock and roll influence guitar wise, great band. heard of the bad livers but never heard them. as far as those annoying
hippie jam grass bands (phish, string cheese, etc), no fucking thanks. there's definitely some good contemporary stuff out there though like: james
king, del mccoury band (he played with monroe in the 60s), don paisley and the southern grass, johnny staats, lost and found, joe val, mike compton,
nashville bluegrass band, michael cleveland, gibson brothers, etc etc.gavin - 6-9-2008 at 08:00 PM

I dunno about whatever experience you had with 'em, but they were really fuckin' cool at the
show I was at. They hung out with the crowd and actually watched and danced to X even though they had been touring with them for quite a while now.
I'm always pleasantly surprised when I see bigger bands actually enjoying the show and not just doing their part of it and then going off to snort
coke in their van or whatever while other bands are playing. I talked to four of the five members of the Cobras and each and every one of them were
genuinely stoked to be there and to see that people were having that much fun at their show.
I've had more than my share of run ins with rock star assholes from my time promoting shows in Austin so I definitely know what you mean, but I didn't
get that vibe from them at all. I also think that you, of all people on here, would really dig their records, Geoff.tireironsaint - 6-9-2008 at 08:16 PM
Oh, they have also changed all but two members of the band many times over, so it's quite possible that the person or people you had problems with
have nothing to do with them now.gavin - 6-9-2008 at 08:28 PM
really long story short
mostly cuz i cant remember all of it and was only there for half of it
about 5 or 6 years ago the bad vibes played with them at this place in philly called the kyber with this other band called hellblock 6, who we all
knew and all that.
it was a thursday night and anyone from philly will tell you its tough to get anyone to come out on a thursday night to see anyone.
when hellblock 6 played(first) the place was packed with people that both us and hellblock 6 bought to the show.
we played. i dont remember it at all.
i had to leave being on a thursday night and i think i had someone sitting with the kids.
turns out, place clears out, and theres maybe 20 people left to see the detroit cobras.
they dont show up until 1:30, a half hour before the place closes, play for 15 mins and demand all the money made at the door that night.
mark and jesse from my band have words with them and the sound guy.
we were garrenteed at least $100 for this show.
they gave us nothing that night because the detroit cobras thretened to have their booking agency pull all the bands they delt with from playing the
kyber.
things were said to mark from the one dude in the band...........
"do you know who my cousin(i think he said cousin) is? jack from thew white stripes!!"
mark says "i dont care. i want our 100 bucks"
blah blah
more words i cant recall
ends up with jesse spitting on the one dude who wanted to fight mark but didnt want to mess with jesse, even though mark would have killed this dude
too. jesse is just a bigger guy.
i forget all the details honestly
this is the best i can recall.
they said a ton of shit that was really lame and rockstar like.
even the faggot who worked at the khyber at the time confirmed all this from a different perspective and said they were fucked and that mark was
right.JawnDiablo - 6-9-2008 at 08:34 PM

Bad Vibes still at the top of my personal favorites....tireironsaint - 6-9-2008 at 08:59 PM
Sounds like a fucked up situation, but I can't even imagine who would have thought booking that kind of line up together was a good idea. While I love
both The Bad Vibes and The Detroit Cobras, even I don't think that would be a good combination. Also, as I said, they've changed the line up so many
times aside from the two main members, both of whom are female, so I can't imagine that either of them were this guy that was being a dick. Doesn't
excuse the behavior and obviously, if they were pulling shit like that it's fucked up.
I would have done the same thing you guys did in that situation, no matter who the band was. And just for the record, fuck the White Stripes. Those
guys are supposed to be some kind of saviors of Rock 'N Roll and they're nothing but a crappy rip off of much better bands that never got the credit
they deserved. Same as The Strokes and all that shit. I would laugh in the face of anyone trying to take money promised to me because they're related
to any of those fuckers, or anyone else for that matter.necrobutcher - 6-9-2008 at 10:49 PM

I'm all over
the Crypt stuff already, LOVE that shit man. The funny thing is, I coulda been one of the cool kids who got into that all when it was just starting up
since I played in a band with a kid who was way into it before anybody around us knew what it was. He was always tryin' to turn me on to alla that
shit, but I was too much of a HC head to dig it at all and now I'm kickin' myself tryin' to go back and pick up all these records I coulda had for
pennies that are now super rare collectors items.
As for The Detroit Cobras, there are many things in their sound, but glam is not really on that list. I'm not sure which album you heard, but try
starting with Baby or Mink, Rat, Or Rabbit and give it a few days to soak in before you make a final call.upyerbum - 6-10-2008 at 01:54 PM

Joe, settle the fuck down. I'd probably be ready to go off on you right now, but it's already been pointed out already.
I will say this though, on more than one occasion I have reached out to you in friendship when you talked about serious issues and yet time and time
again you pull shit like this, frequently aimed at me, it seems. I'm really not sure why my opinion is so much more offensive to you than everybody
else's to the point that you need to go off like that over it, but maybe treating people like that contributes to your depression. Not trying to be a
dick, but I know that if I'm pissed off about something or going through tough times it always makes things worse for me when I act like an asshole to
people who don't deserve it. There's no point to it, and it sure as fuck won't make you feel better or make me change my opinions.Six66Mike - 6-10-2008 at 09:26 PM

to mention earlier that Greg from The Oblivians has been rather involved with the Detroit Cobras a lot too. I know he's played on at least one of

I agree with all of these
bands except for The Gruesomes, just because I don't think I am familiar with their shit and Jon Spencer because I think that guy is the biggest waste
of talent on the planet. His bands all irritate the shit outta me because it's painfully obvious that he can play anything he wants to, but thinks
it's cool to fuck it up in a way that everybody can tell is intentional. It just comes off as playing down to his audience which I find offensive and
forced.tireironsaint - 6-10-2008 at 10:35 PM

The Gruesomes are out of Canada I think. There stuff is hard to find I think they released alot of stuff around the same time period as the Mummies,
late eighties, early nineties. Along the same lines as alot of the stuff we have agreed on already. Yeah Jon Spencer is actually one of my least
favorite of the bands I had thrown out there, but I think they're ok. I also really dig alot of the newer stuff that Gearhead has been putting out,
"Demons" being my favorite of those.upyerbum - 6-11-2008 at 07:23 AM
