Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

who deserves a 'Hardcore Legend' card?

XHonusWagnerX - 6-11-2008 at 02:49 PM

We had a thread awhile back about what bands would/should be in the 'Hardcore Hall of Fame'. This is a similiar idea, but more based on individual people rather than bands.

H.R.
Ray Cappo
Henry Rollins
Greg Ginn

Mark Lind - 6-11-2008 at 02:50 PM

Guy's a legend on the street, love him or hate him.

joemaconmovies - 6-13-2008 at 08:45 AM

i don't think dkm is hardcore punk though, that's all. there are a number of boston bands that had a much harder punk sound then them.

so what are they then?

joemaconmovies - 6-13-2008 at 10:48 AM

dkm is punk. they're a lot more celtic punk recently. i just don't really see the hardcore punk except when they do hardcore covers. sorry. my opinion. if dkm gets in then i've got a giant list of boston punk bands that should be listed.

gavin - 6-13-2008 at 11:13 AM

thing is where does one draw the line

i think anyone, be them "punk" or "hardcore" who has made a big impact on this culture(and whether some people like it or not, all this is rooted in punk rock) they should be a part of any sort of list made.

honestly i dont either
but one could look at it like there are few punk bands in the last however many years that have made the kind of impact they have
so i could see how one would think they may have a place although personally i dont

XHonusWagnerX - 6-13-2008 at 12:30 PM

What about Dickey Barret?

Impact Unit
Bosstones
Jimmy Kimal show
Drew the cover for DYS 'Brotherhood'

gavin - 6-13-2008 at 12:51 PM

here's a "hardcore" list of people who have made an important contribution to these things. dont debate me on this. really think about the people i mention and understand what they have done............in no order,

johnny rotten
joe strummer
johnny, deedee and joey ramone
lemmy
stiv
darby crash
john doe and exene from X
keith morris
greg ginn
chuck dukowski
henry rollins
ian mccaye
john brannon
tesco
biafra
h.r.
roger and stigma
harley and john
danzig
wattie
lee ving
jerry a and pig from poison idea
paul bearer
jimmy from sham 69

SS76 - 6-13-2008 at 12:58 PM

thank you sir

i can actually tell beforehand who will agree with me and who will not.

joemaconmovies - 6-13-2008 at 01:07 PM

if we wanted people who made important contributions to the scene, then it shouldn't just be hardcore legends. it does get confusing. i won't argue with you. but if we're gonna include punk i'm gonna include dkm members.

newbreedbrian - 6-13-2008 at 01:09 PM

you'll get no arguments from me on any of those, though i'd like to add charlie harper to the list

SS76 - 6-13-2008 at 01:10 PM

I wouldn't, but someone else here might. I'd buy a deck of these hardcore legend cards....we'd need 52 and it could be done. Jimmy G would definately be a joker....

gavin - 6-13-2008 at 01:12 PM

it should be the whole thing as one thing.
it gets too weird when someone says hardcore.
cuz like alot of people think hatebreed is hardcore and to me it sounds like shitty shitty metal with some baseball hat wearing jock screaming over it.

so thats why im thinking as a whole as opposed to splitting it up into classifications

i have no beef with dkm being in
i wouldnt put them there but im cool with it if they are

SS76 - 6-13-2008 at 01:12 PM

Rob Lind would top my list, maybe the ace of clubs, and you know what Lemmy gets.

JawnDiablo - 6-13-2008 at 01:40 PM

I'd put Iggy Pop in there.
That's just me though.
Iggy's pretty hardcore as per definitionof hard core

Exactly. Despite the ridiculous number of sub-genres there are these days, at the end of the day it all comes from punk. The Pistols, Clash, and Ramones influenced all of the bands that started hardcore. Interview any of the old school guys like Brannon and they'll tell you the same thing. Oi ain't hardcore, but there's a lot of guys/bands I'd add to this list.

Bruisers
Business
Anti-Heros
Cock Sparrer
Cockney Rejects
Sham 69
Last Resort

to name a few.

upyerbum - 6-13-2008 at 04:30 PM

There's the guys that started it, but there's also the guys who keep it going. You could break it into decades. And personally I think anybody who's out there bustin' their ass for little to no money deserves a tip of the hat. I'm sure we could come up with a list of 52 people from every scene and every era. And I can't believe nobodhy's mentioned GG, none more hardcore than GG.

upyerbum - 6-13-2008 at 04:34 PM

Let us not forget the fairer sex:

Penelope Houston
Wendy O'Williams
Becky Bondage
Polly Styrene

I agree with them all... just curious, why no Marky Ramone?

Here are some other good possibilities....

Wendy O. Williams (I know someone else said her too)
Rob Lind
Iggy Pop (even though I'm not a big fan)
G.G. Allin
Kevin Seconds
Mike Muir
Pepper Keenan
Walter Schreifels
Dave Smalley
Milo Aukerman

This could have come right outta my mouth. I get into the arguments about genres and such and younger kids accuse me of sticking too much to the definitions of it that I have, but I see it as them doing that from the other side of the issue and while I exclude bands like Hatebreed and all that garbage, they exclude bands like DKs or Big Boys because it doesn't fit their idea of the proper sound.

joemaconmovies - 6-13-2008 at 07:52 PM

tommy ramone before marky ramone because tommy created the drumming style

LordActionWood - 6-13-2008 at 09:11 PM

this is such a rough question for me because:

1. I am not much for guru/people worship...you are a legend when the music "hits" you..therefore anyone can be a legend...that is what is cool about hardcore

2. The spirit of hardcore music, in my opinion, is traceable right back to the roots of black music in america...should we give son house some respects on this jawn?!?

i swear i am not trying to be a dick......this is a hard question.
