pick up a copy of the village voice. there's always stuff happening in the city. lots of free music, some of it good. look for 'summer stage' in central park and whatever they call the 'wall to waterfront' series (southern tip of manhattan - lots of free events).

not sure what types of things you're looking to do while in town, but some stuff we did with out of town guests when we lived were...

- walk across the brooklyn bridge. grab a pie at Grimaldi's and a cone at the brooklyn ice cream factory. from there, it's a few short blocks to the brooklyn heights promenade.

- chinatown. where to begin? bring your hunger. the street vendors have great offerings, but check out Joe's Shanghai on Pell St for the original soup dumplings.

- central park. i'm not an uptown kinda guy, but i love central park. in part for the people watching, in part for the serenity (when ya live in that city, you gotta chill out some times!). grab a map and wander around. the boat pond (technically called Conservatory Water) is one of my favorite spots.

- new york phil harmonic in central park is real soon. one of my favorite events. shit ton of people, but great music, outside, fireworks and all the booze you can carry.
