Best way to clean your hard drive?

CR83 - 6-21-2008 at 09:52 AM

We are handing in an old lap top and want to make sure our info isn't on there. I know just deleting the info doesn't do it. Can anyone recommend something for me? Ideally ranging from cheap to free?

Thanks!

here's one that i've used before: Eraser
it's freeware. there's a portable version available that you can run from a usb drive at http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/eraser_portable

A program called boot nuke has always worked for me. Sorry but I don't have a link.

As always, you guys rule. I did come across boot and nuke. I will review these and hook it up.

Thanks Boys!

There's an old thread lurking here somewhere with a bunch of links :) @active make good software that wipes the drive thoroughly, anything that trashes the partition and re-writes all secotrs to 0, and does it with atleast 2 passes should be safe. Depends how deep you want it done, what sort of stuff you had on it.

little late on this sorry, but...
you want soemthing, like mike said, that not just deletes your data, but overwrites the entire contents of the disc.
