How much do you spend on music?

Discipline - 6-26-2008 at 01:26 PM

Out of curiosity I went onto Interpunk and totalled up the the amount I've spent there since my first order in Jan 2004. At interpunk alone I've spent $1548.33. On ebay, which I also joined in 2004, I figure I've spent at least $3000, if not more. Plus I've bought stuff at shows, at different stores, Amazon, etc.

That's a lot of fucking money.

LordActionWood - 6-26-2008 at 01:41 PM

I spend too much money, but I fucking love it.

On contemporary music, I probably only spend about 100 bucks a year tops on CD purchases and downloads.

As I have mentioned before, I dump most my cash on original reggae 45s from the 60s and 70s....the cheapest ones go for about 15-20 bucks. This year, I spent retard money on a few desirable 45s. My collection is reaching the intermediate stages so the average record I want goes for 60-100 bucks.

And then, there is my soul 45 collection....you can actually spend thousands of dollars on single records but I am still gathering the more common stuff as far as soul goes.

Philly is awesome to go soul record shopping....tons of wanted 45s for a dollar.

i used to spend a fortune on music
fuckin alot of money
my house is filled with cds
now i download everything
not so much cuz its free but its easy
ill buy stuff from a band i really like
other then that, im downloading it
i cant afford to spend $20 on a cd if i want one rolling stones song or whatever

clevohardcore - 6-26-2008 at 02:01 PM

I have no idea. Where do you find your totals on EBAY?

Discipline - 6-26-2008 at 02:28 PM

With ebay I'm making a guess. I've spent A LOT of money on there.

XHonusWagnerX - 6-26-2008 at 02:38 PM

I go through phases, but I have been buying music in one form or another for over 25 years. When I was like 8-10 I was going to KISS conventions and buying LPs to finish the collection. I had a TON of cassettes and then spent a lot replacing them with CDs.

Now I download some stuff (soulseek & what we share here) and I buy 'rare vinyl' from lables online or on eBay depending what it is. Other than that I buy new releases usually at Newbury Comics and if I dont get it the week it comes out then I dont get it. For older stuff or more obscure stuff I usually goto Armageddon Shop in Providence because its the local 'cool kid punk rock store'.

If I had to guess I would say that from the begining of buying stuff I am easily over $15,000 especially with some of the old Metallica & Megadeth stuff I used to buy and the Slapshot stuff.

newbreedbrian - 6-26-2008 at 02:57 PM

don't want to even guess what i've spent over the years. the last couple years, not very much at all. i've also got a pretty decent sized ska/rocksteady/early reggae collection, but you ain't kidding that stuff went through the roof the last few years. in addition to the usual punk/hardcore stuff, my collection is pretty varied these days

Murk - 6-26-2008 at 03:02 PM

i average about $500/year.

Mark Lind - 6-26-2008 at 03:26 PM

I generally buy 1 - 3 CD's per week.

JawnDiablo - 6-26-2008 at 03:27 PM

I have no clue how much money I have wrapped up in music.
Between my girlfriend and I we have over 1200 cds, a bunch of vinyl ans cassettes.
I sold off a ton of vnyl years ago and gave away most of my tapes..
Her dad had an entire room dedicated to his record collection back in the day. hard tmes fell on the family when her mom died and he had to sell most of it to stay afloar with the family and stuff.
LordActionWood, there used to be this record store in UD near the terminal, i don't know if it is still there, i know the sign is still there. . It was called R&B records. I bet they have a lot of stuff in there of interest.

BDx13 - 6-26-2008 at 03:43 PM

not that much any more.
i buy current releases in phases...i probably buy 10 cds twice a year.
so what's that, $200-$250?
one of those sprees is for my wife for christmas, the other is stuff i've got a list of that i know i want.

then there's ebay.
i don't have the funds to shop willy nilly like i used to, but there are a few bands i collect, so i keep an occasional eye out for releases i'm missing from tad, hope conspiracy, etc.
this might be $500/yr.

Six66Mike - 6-26-2008 at 04:00 PM

Used to spend hundreds at a time going to the store and buying shit, or would come home from a show with 2-8 CD's and a couple shirts. Depends who was playing and if anyone had a small distro going. These days at shows here there's rarely distro's and there aren't many shows I attend but I still buy the locals music if it was good.

Most of my CD's were bought in my teens and early 20's, now it's mostly downloads and order in things I really dig or picking up the odd CD at a store like the last Darkest Hour and finally picking up an old Stretch Arm Strong album.

I'm hoping for a big raise in the next month so I can finally order in some CD's I been waiting to get for months like new Cursed, Blacklisted, Pittbull, the last Sick of it All full length...a bunch of stuff.

JawnDiablo - 6-26-2008 at 04:01 PM

I'd like to start buying more stuff but I can never remember what I want if I am out or shopping online.
Shit I haven't anywhere to put them anyway.

Siczine.com - 6-26-2008 at 04:19 PM

I couldn't even tell you but I know its a lot. I definitely have the most CD's of anyone of my friends/family/etc. Writing for a zine doesn't hurt and playing in a band doesn't hurt either though!

SS76 - 6-26-2008 at 04:26 PM

hundred a month maybe...

XHonusWagnerX - 6-26-2008 at 05:23 PM

JawnDiablo - 6-26-2008 at 05:35 PM

SS76 - 6-26-2008 at 05:35 PM

I thought that was my shit for a minute....got same wooden cd racks with the same slayer and motorhead box on top, only I have the zztop box next to them. had to look back for a minute......hell of a coincidence! Honus, did you get the racks at newbury comics or in your ear music?

Jason the Magnificent - 6-26-2008 at 05:40 PM

How much does soulseek cost?

And Honus, that KISS collection rules.

THATS PRETTY FUNNY! THOSE RACKS DIDNT COME FROM NEWBURY OR IN YOUR EAR, BUT THEY ARE THE SAME ONES. I BOUGHT THEM AT THE MAVERICK WOODWORKING STORE THAT IS/WAS IN ALLSTON. ITS THE PLACE THAT THOSE STORES BOUGHT THEM FROM.

Six66Mike - 6-26-2008 at 07:30 PM

I haven't used Soulseek in ages, waiting for 157 to become the official release then I may start using it again. For now private torrent trackers have all my needs met.

Discipline - 6-26-2008 at 09:01 PM

I figure that since I was a kid, I've probably spent between 20-30 grand on records, tapes, cds, and music related shit like shows and merch. It's scary. When I still had house content insurance I figured in $50,000 for all the music related stuff and dvd's, then added more coverage for the furnature, electronics and other such things.

DAK - 6-26-2008 at 09:25 PM

I don't wanna think about it. Way to much.

same. i also go to shows and buy merch sometimes.
all in all around 300 euros a year which is like 450 dollars.

Murk - 6-27-2008 at 12:49 AM

haha, at least i wasn't the only that didn't get the sarcasm.

if i didn't have "preview access" my spending would be maybe $200/yr or lower.

if i had more money, it would probably be closer to $1000/yr.

i might be the only one who engages in file sharing and it actually makes me buy more than i would without it.

no one ever believes me, but when Napster was in it's prime and i learned how to use it good, my music spending tripled, for months and months...

nah, it's cool.

if you figure in music related vinyl, tapes, CDs, VHS, DVD, books, magazines, shows and merch...

i'm sure it's WAY past 30K for me.

MikeCore - 6-27-2008 at 02:42 AM

Hmmm.....~$70 a month for axxs to $1,000's if not $10,000's worth of 0's and 1's :punk:

JawnDiablo - 6-28-2008 at 09:55 AM

I spend more $$ on coffee these days than I do on music

MyOwnWay - 6-28-2008 at 11:23 AM

Between releasing cds on Awake/Strong, and buying cds for myself... Its more than I care to put a price tag on.
