I'm in the market for a new place to host my site. It doesn't get very much traffic monthly but I do have a ton of data on it, so I need something
with higher storage plans but lower monthly bandwidth, and all I seem to find is higher & higher bandwidth without much increase in storage.
Currently I get 2GB storage and 100GB monthly bandwidth with Unix hosting, comes with CPanel to manage the site and includes Fantastico for extra
features like pbpBB and Gallery which I use to host display my images (over 3,000 so far).
For this Unix plan I pay $20/month, next up is 3.5GB storage for $35/month or 5GB storage for $65/month. 3.5GB won't last very long and $65/month is
not affordable, no matter how much the US dollar falls (I pay Canadian but the prices are equal regardless).
So where do you guys host your sites and what sort of storage to cost are you looking at? Post up some links, has to be reliable above all and easy
to use, I don't want to manage the site from an FTP client, needs to have a back end management system.
http://www.bluefur.com/hosting/unixhostingcanada.php I'm currently on this Unix Starter plan.

Holy shit $10/month for the first year with 100GB storage and 1,000GB bandwidth though it doesn't say per month or anything so I wonder what the catch
is? They even make a site for you if you want based on templates.
Basic hosting $5/month but only 1.5GB, I'm already past 1.5GB of my current 2GB plan. Their business plan says unlimited storage! I'll sign a 2 year
deal for that lol it's only $2 more per month than my current plan.
Are their any catches with this site cuz I'm sold
Thanks for the link.

i use powweb.com and it's cheap and works well from me. doug from the ducky boys suggested it to me back in like '04 when he was using it for another
website.

glad to hear lunarpages is still working out for you, boycott.
they are one of the better providers of 'oversold' hosting.
i had a dedicated box with them for a year and had no problems.

Found some more:
http://www.bluehost.com/tell_me_more.html $6.95/month unlimited storage, uses CPanel 11 so I am already familiar with the back end.
http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html $9/month for 2 years (cheaper the longer you stay) for initially 500GB storage, they give you an extra 2GB
per week as a bonus as well.
http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/gs/ 100GB storage for $20/monthly and offers money back guarantee if you don't like.
So far have only got feedback on MediaTemple, uptime seems solid and 24/7 support (most give that anyways)

you have to consider what it is you really want from this hosting service. these places that offer 500BG of diskspace and 5TB of bandwidth for $5 are
banking on the likelihood that you'll never use anywhere near that. and if you do, be prepared for the possibility of your account being closed.
make sure you keep your files backed up locally and are comfortable with limited support. you'll likely get a ticket system or message board support
only.
mediatemple is wildly popular with the web 2.0 and design nerd set, although, i'm not really a fan. the plan of theirs that you are considering is
cloud computing - you should be aware of the issues that come with that. amazon offers a similar product:
aws.amazon.com/ec2

Well DreamHost charge an extra $4/month for a dedicated IP which I'd need for my DNS. Still cheaper than my current host.
The site is essentially going to be a Gallery for family photos, the odd mpg video and I'll probably setup a blog there and ditch my Livejournal or
something. It'll be a data dump for any.zip files as well but not much more than that. I'll get my friend to design a new site as well.
Bluehost actually has this in the T&C's:
# Foul language and profanity in the site content, and in the domain name are prohibited.
I guess that rules them out lol

careful with the zips, too.
that's exactly the kind of thing these places use against you.
just back up your shit.

Yeah I need to backup more often lol.
Friend at work is keen on this hosting as well, and DreamHost gives unlimited domains so I can point 20 domains and host 20 sites with this one plan.
He does design so he can design & host his clients sites on this space & charge them normal Australian hosting prices or a bit cheaper and make a good
profit.
I emailed them some sales questions earlier and got a reply within 20 minutes. I've just sent a few more questions off to them as well.

companies like these are perfect for the types you sites you're talking about and are a great way to make money hosting sites for small businesses.
