Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

TWO SHEER TERROR CONTESTS FROM THORP RECORDS

BDx13 - 4-13-2005 at 04:40 PM

That's right... We're giving you not one, but TWO new chances to win MORE FREE CRAP from THORP RECORDS!

1) The first contest sounds simple enough, but it requires dutiful patience and a keen sense of market demand. The 50th person to order Sheer Terror's "Beaten By The Fists Of God" through the Thorp Store will receive a Thorp Records T-shirt and a hand-printed poster from the Sheer Terror reunion at CBGB.

2) The second contest also requires a fair amount of patience, but also a convincing pen (or in this case keyboard). It's an essay contest! Submit a 150 word (maximum) essay on the theme of "What Does Sheer Terror Mean To You". All submissions must be sent to contests@thorprecords.com no later than 11:59PM, Friday, April 22. A winner will be announced on Monday, April 25. That person will receive Sheer Terror's "Beaten By The Fists Of God", a hand-printed poster from the Sheer Terror reunion at CBGB, AND Thorp Records T-shirt.

These posters were originally created for sale at the Sheer Terror reunion show, but a special batch of six was printed up for use in Thorp Records contests. They are all signed and numbered by artist Gary Gilmore of Wrongway Flyers.

"What Sheer Terror Means To Me" - by Andrew Thorp King

THORP - 4-13-2005 at 04:53 PM

In times of incomprehensible demoralization, unspeakable
disillusionment in relationships, personal depravity, and teeming
hardcore anger, I often turn to the poignant lyrics and rousing music
of Rev. Paul Bearer and SHEER TERROR. While the music and lyrics often
offer no new hope for whatever I am experiencing, the sheer accuracy of
describing such emotions often becomes hope in and of itself because I
am struck with the knowledge that I am not the first to be plagued with
such predicaments. This often leads to dissolving/releasing my anger,
taking a deep breath of introspection in my relationships, and laughing
at the brilliant sarcasm of Paul Bearer to ease my mind and send me on
my recovered way.

What does Sheer Terror mean to you?

A perfect example of what makes Thorp the best label around. While anybody might run a little promo so that number X person who buys something gets a bonus, who asks for an essay? You guys fuckin' rule. Honestly, not only do you have some of the absolute best bands signed, you prove again and again that you actually care about this stuff and it's not just a business.

HAHAHAHA, that's exactly what I thought when I suggested it to Andy. "Who the fuck do we think we are asking for an essay?!" Anyway, we'll see what happens. And thanks for the compliment.

gavin - 4-15-2005 at 05:10 PM

what are the standings duane?
how many have you gotten and how far ahead of them am i?

TTF - 4-15-2005 at 05:35 PM

Having recieved a copy of MrBadVibes essay I really don't see any need for the contest to continue. It had heart, soul, made me laugh, cry, experience birth and death. Give the man the goods for gods sakes. Paul would want it that way. Just for the record, it's not really Sheer Terror unless Alan Blake is playing guitar. Mark Neumann blew, blows, and will continue to blow.

Ok, as I produced the thing and worked with the band for so many years I can't actually win this contest, but I thought I'd put my two cents in. The main reason being it's 3:13 am and I finished a large cup of coffee about an hour ago.

-----------
I first met Paul on my first day of 7th grade in 1979. It was my first day in a new school, so I put on my best duds, and my best friend Carl (later of Breakdown/ Raw Deal/ Killing Time) was rocking his Kiss Army t. We walked into this strange building, where we were confronted by this chubby bulldog kid who shoved a Plasmatics album in our faces. Although it seems like old hat now, at the time, I'd never seen a chick with a blue mohawk and electrical tape over her nipples, so I was fascinated. The kid standing a few feet down from us started making comments about how disgusting it was, so the fat bulldog kid (who'se name was Paul) punched him and was immediately hauled off to the Vice-Principals office.

A few hours later Paul and some wild-eyed-readhead spent our lunchtime grabbing random students and throwing them down an embankment near the junior high ballfield. I wasn't in the same class as he was, so I didn't really spend alot of quality time with him during those years.

Fearing I was to become a juvenile delinquent in public school, my parents forced me into Catholic high school so I lost touch with the fat bulldog kid.

Years later in 1986, I got into hardcore. One day a few friends of mine made the hour and a half trek from Yonkers to Middletown NY- to the Grunge Club for a hardcore show, and saw this band- fronted by this crazy maniac who called out all the hicks in the place and threw furniture around. They brought home a demo and we were all hooked.

A few weeks later the band played CB's and instantly became a fan. A few shows later someone told me he was the same kid I went to school with and we began to talk. A few months later in 1989, I put them on my first release, Where The Wild Things Are, and continue to work with them up until now.

But why? why Sheer Terror instead of some trendy youth crew bullshit? I'll tell you why...and it can be summed up in three words...intelligence, passion and honesty. Over and above the brutally heavy songwriting and the borderline criminal drunken antics of Paul and his Droogs..... Sheer Terror, Paul in particular, was fucking brilliant.

Paul wrote (and continues to write) incredibly gut wrenching songs that were light years ahead of any self depricating, white-belt wearing pantywaste emo band of today. It's funny how someone who's lyrics are the epitome of personal angst and self deprication became the poster child for hate-core. Becuase in reality nothing could be further from the truth.

Next, There is no "character" of Paul Bearer. Who you see is who you get. He never faked a friendship, or kissed anyone's ass. (So far to the contrary he often shot himself and thereby me and his band in the foot.) He also stuck to his guns... when everyone was a bald headed republican he was singing "Hand Over Heartburn". When the world went straightedge... he got drunk. And when other bands changed their image to suit the marketplace... he stripped down to a leather jockstrap in front of 2000 kids and sang Cure covers.

And that is 100% punk fuckin' rock.

----------------------------
Oh, for the record, Neuman is actually a fuckin' hilarious guy (albeit a bit neu-rotic) and you should cut him some slack. Without his influence, the band would have self destructed WAY before anyone ever got to know them.
But you'll see that when you buy the DVD, now wontcha?

(I thought the hate was reserved for the other board?)
