How much cushion do you have?

BDx13 - 9-30-2008 at 04:17 PM

All this recent financial news got me thinking...

'They' say you're supposed to have three to six months of living expenses available in savings as a cushion in case of emergency.

How much have you got?
(in terms of duration, not amount)

Jason the Magnificent - 9-30-2008 at 04:27 PM

4-6 MOS BABY.
Down with credit and up with money in the bank and not buying shit I don't have the money for today.

CR83 - 9-30-2008 at 04:47 PM

4 to 6 thanks to Mrs. R83. We are on spending lock down. We never have credit card balances either.

Voodoobillyman - 9-30-2008 at 04:51 PM

The military is big on saving they recommend two full paychecks saved at anytime.

defstarsteve - 9-30-2008 at 05:12 PM

none of the above...

I owe more money it seems than the government

I owe about 25 jobs worth of shirts right now, which is better than it was 2 weeks ago
and every penny that would go to profit, savings, or bills is going into catching up...
but the more I catch up the further behind it seems I am getting in other areas...

I am operating 2 households and locations so our monthly bills are about 15k a month
so for me to have 45 to 90 thousand in the bank would be a fucking miracle.

hell I wok up again this morning to another negative balance in our account thanks to a distributor double charging my account...

everytime I get a few large put away something comes along and bends me over...
I am seriously looking at moving everything to Korea and forgetting the U.S. even exists...

we have 0 credit at this point, we can not get credit...
it's us against the world and we are losing our grip...

basically if they come for me I wont even have the shirt on my back,
and sometimes I wish they would hurry the fuck up about it.

BDx13 - 9-30-2008 at 05:18 PM

two months currently.
four by the end of the year.

bills are starting to come in for the boy's recent hospital stay, though.
trying to figure out how to deal with that, and still hit the four month cushion by the end of the year.
the plan is to pay 1/4 immediately and the remainder in installments or on a 0% credit card.
i've got the money to pay it, but i work on a contract basis...i can't stomach not having cash on hand.

clevohardcore - 9-30-2008 at 05:24 PM

nothing. I am in debt. School loans, credit cards car lease.

XHonusWagnerX - 9-30-2008 at 06:04 PM

Im lucky enough to be in the 4-6 month catagory. I could have more, but I buy to much stuff. Again, luckily I buy stuff that (most of the time) could be resold for a decent amount of money so I could probably drum up another couple of months if I sold stuff off.

That being said... I'm still worried about the way that things are going.

JawnDiablo - 9-30-2008 at 06:16 PM

till next payday.......
i try though.
really i do.
the endless hours add up to nothing

moron - 9-30-2008 at 06:45 PM

I'm estimating 4-6 months, but that's only because we've been so focused on saving lately with the goal of buying a house come spring/summer. We've basically been trying to live off of my wife's paychecks and sock mine away. I guess if anything happens from now until the spring/summer we're ok. We do have some debt though it's manageable.

So pretty much we're good until we put all of our savings into a home. Then we'll be back to month to month for a while. We don't plan on buying a house that's out of our means though.

random - 9-30-2008 at 07:00 PM

i'll raise clevo. about negative 2-3 years, given student loans and current income. supposedly it will pay itself off in the long run.

bombidol - 9-30-2008 at 07:01 PM

Probably a week or two if I lived super fuckin basic. Though I owe a fuck load more than I currently have.

bombidol - 9-30-2008 at 07:02 PM

we should go back to the barter system. You could never owe anyone more than a fuckin pig or a bag of grain.

Discipline - 9-30-2008 at 07:47 PM

I'm as broke as a convict.

DaveMoral - 9-30-2008 at 09:49 PM

Shirt on my back. I live paycheck to paycheck and at this rate I won't be able to rent my own place for a long time. Work is bullshit, I'm definitely going to need to pick up another job. It's fucked up.

upyerbum - 9-30-2008 at 10:03 PM

I've got a good job, but if that goes I'm pretty much fucked.

thats how I am too. The only reason I have any cushion is because of what my job pays.

BDx13 - 10-1-2008 at 10:46 AM

moron, we were the same way.

we've been check to check most of our adult lives. when both my wife and i were working, we lived it up. we first started putting aside when we decided to have a kid. eventually, that led to a house fund. of course, a month after moving in, my biggest client at the time closed up shop. we spent 18 months drawing from what was left in our house fund every month to make ends meet.

this year has been the breakout year. i had a lot of contract offers, so i went out on my own full time. we've paid ourselves back what we borrowed from savings and will have doubled that amount by the end of the year. we'll also pay off our long term credit card this year. and that's what makes these hospital bills sting - it's like the minute i truly get ahead, i'm slapped back down!

BDx13 - 10-1-2008 at 10:48 AM

HA!
I just looked at the poll results.
I wanna know who's set for life!
I threw that in cause I figure ya never know.

Congrats, whoever you are.
Hopefully, you live life with fewer knots in your stomach than I!

jonnynewbreed - 10-1-2008 at 02:56 PM

I wanna know who the rich one is on here. I took a huge paycut to take my current job but have traded lot's of money for lot's of happiness.

Furly - 10-1-2008 at 03:53 PM

I took over my family business. I continue to run everything solo. If I were to sell today I would make enough money to live comfortably for 20+ years.

That being said, I'm far from rich. I just look great on paper. I work hard to keep everything running smooth and will contine to do so till it's time to pass it on to a younger generation.

moron - 10-1-2008 at 06:58 PM

nice. Im sure that's more satisfying than being a trust fund baby.

Siczine.com - 10-1-2008 at 07:06 PM

I have nothing but student debt.

moron - 10-1-2008 at 07:12 PM

Duane, for the 5 years Mrs. Moron and I lived in NYC we had lots of fun. I never really made that much money, but the Mrs. did fine once she started working as a nurse. When we moved back to CT and did our income taxes in April we saw how much money she was making and we couldn't fucking figure out where it all went. We literally had NOTHING to show for our time in NYC... monetarily speaking... but lots fun times and good stories. Hell, I hadn't even given a thought to saving for retirement until this past January. We finally did our first official budget this past spring! We never had any idea how much money was coming in and where it was going.

DaveMoral - 10-2-2008 at 11:46 AM

I think I'll be working 2 jobs soon, and Mrs Moral will be employed too hopefully. I'm really hurting right now... and the economy hasn't even collasped. I mean, shit, couldn't the hard times wait until I have to go all Tom Joad?
