Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

congrats, Phillies fans

"The Phillies won the NL pennant to advance to their first World Series since 1993 with a 5-1 win over the Dodgers in Game 5."

DAK - 10-16-2008 at 12:01 AM

Congrats. I hope Lidge doesn't melt down like he did for the Astro's in the World Series.

JawnDiablo - 10-16-2008 at 06:34 AM

I'm a happy bastard about this.

clevohardcore - 10-16-2008 at 07:57 AM

I did not see this coming and they are a good team this year. Dodgers just sucked. If the phillies are playing the series versus the Rays the Rays will wipe the floor with them. Sorry Philly fans.

JawnDiablo - 10-16-2008 at 10:14 AM

We'll see about that.

moron - 10-16-2008 at 10:53 AM

There's a bit of a layoff between now and the world series. Hope the Phils prepare better than the Rockies did last year. Good luck.

Wipe the floor with them? Don't be sure so sure. Not many outside of Philly gave the Phils a chance against the Dodgers because of Manny and look what happened, Manny had a great series and the Phillies won 3-1. The Phillies have had great pitching from the end of the season until now and the offense, which can be one of the most potent, has made timely hits during the post season. Howard hasn't even hit a HR yet, and if he gets hot during the World Series, look out.

yes.

thedog - 10-16-2008 at 12:58 PM

most people thought the Mets would win the division not the Phillies, they didn't.
a lot of people thought the Brewers would beat the Phils, they didn't.
almost everyone thought the Dodgers would beat them, they didn't.

so now i am sure no one will give them a chance in the series.
fine by me, i like them bein the underdog.

i really dont care which team makes it ,
either team in the world series will be tough.

Tampa is a good story, but fuck all their fair weather fans.

clevo didnt you say how nasty Billingsley is?
the Phils shit on him twice.

clevohardcore - 10-16-2008 at 01:01 PM

Manny was the only score off Hamels. Hamels was on point. I like the Phils and even have several players from Philly on my fantasy team this year and last. HOWARD, ROLLINS, and Victorino. I still ended up in 4th place.

WHatever the case they were saying on ESPN about how many players PHILLY grabbed from LA over the past couple years. HAMELS, VICTORINO, and several others.

Hamels is from California but he was drafted by the Phillies.

a lot of the Phillies came through their system

^^^^^^^ Hamels was recruited by LA but instead chose to attend college, then was drafted by Phillies.

Siczine.com - 10-16-2008 at 01:58 PM

But Hamels was never drafted by the Dodgers. The two main players the Phillies got from the Dodgers were Victorino and Werth.

MarkV - 10-16-2008 at 04:07 PM

The Dodgers certainly didn't "suck." Game 4 was in the bag, and frankly, Torre blew it with bad pitcher selection.
Last night was awful and the team was completely deflated from jump. I'll take "they sucked" last night. The rest of the series, not at all.

And, I'm sticking with my "NL is generally inferior to AL" philosophy and not expecting the WS to go more than 5 games.

As for the "fair weathered fans" shit that everyone's going on about. So what? They're a new team, that's sucked for most of its existence. To be honest, 75% of the league doesn't have strong fanbases. NY, Boston, Chicago, Philly, maybe Cleveland.... those are kind of exceptions to the rule.

yeah they are new for a baseball team, but they been around for ten years.
but even this year when the team was playing ridiculously good they were not getting
a very good turn out.
its a shame they have a team with a ton of talent a nice ball park
and they dont start comin out til the playoffs.

MarkV - 10-16-2008 at 11:15 PM

10 years is a pretty new franchise. Esp since Tampa is notoriously Yankees' country.
And again, that's not THAT uncommon. NY, Boston, etc always have rabid fanbases (although it wasnt that long ago when Fenway didn't sell out). Other cities don't.

thedog - 10-17-2008 at 12:22 AM

there was 13 teams (almost half the teams in the league) this year that were over more than 75% of
what there total stadium capacity attendance could be.

so all i am saying is for a team as good as the rays its a shame they only get 53%.

MarkV - 10-17-2008 at 08:51 AM

How about size of park?

The % is based on what each individual park holds.
Tampa's park has the 2nd smallest capacity and they only sold 53%

clevohardcore - 10-17-2008 at 10:31 AM

I love baseball. I have passion for several team and more than others. Am I fair weather for dissing Boston? But personally they are and have been my second favorite team since my youth. I still want to see Rays make it because of the baseball emotion or whatever of it. Rays are bad ass this year and will be for several years to come. IN a perfect world I would like to see BOSTON verse RAYS, but that is happening right now.

I understand how they figure percentage.

I wanted to know the capacity of the park, because I've never been to the stadium in Tampa.

You know, like 100% of 35,000 is still less than 70% of 60,000?
