It doesn't seem fair to not have a dedicated beer thread of eventual epic proportions on a board as fine as this
Let it begin...good beers you've had recently, good places to drink, brewery tours, brewpubs and their food...anything and everything beer related.

Picked up a couple variety packs last night I haven't had a chance to dig into yet. A 12 variety pack from Southern Tier and a variety 4 pack from
Flying Dog as well as some Anchor Barleywines and a Samual Smith Winter Warmer.
Only had the Southern Tier IPA so far which was pretty solid but a bit too creamy. I prefer my IPA's to make me feel like I'm licking pine needles.SS76 - 11-6-2008 at 01:57 PM
Killians irish red draft all last nightJason the Magnificent - 11-6-2008 at 01:58 PM
and to crash my own post...tonight I'm heading to the Bavarian Lodge which is an amazing German restaurant in the SW burbs that has an elaborate
selection of craft beer.
They just tapped Surly Darkness, a rare small batch Imperial Stout...want to make sure I don't miss it.Siczine.com - 11-6-2008 at 02:35 PM
I would love to try all the fancy, expensive types of craft beers, however, my budget doesn't allow it. Shit I consider it a splurge to get some
Guinness now and then. One day.Discipline - 11-6-2008 at 03:06 PM

this is my beer, best in the world.
otherwise i like some guinness, but it tastes best in ireland...DAK - 11-6-2008 at 03:43 PM
I like Youngs Double Chocolate Stout but it's almost 4 dollars a pint bottle. I can't stand the cans with the nitogen cartridge inside. Every beer I
have had with the cartridge makes it taste different. My favorite is the Shiner Bohemiem Black Lager. It taste the same as the Samuel Adams Black and
is cheeper.DAK - 11-6-2008 at 03:50 PM

That and Shiner Bock are my 2 faovrites. About the only Shiner I've tried that just didn't work for me was the Hefewiezen (sp?) Guinness is
definately pretty high up there.
And of course I can't forget about my staple beer... Lone Star.DAK - 11-6-2008 at 03:57 PM

tons of stuff but lately it's been about :
Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout
Rogue Shakespeare Stout
Rogue Mocha PorterSS76 - 11-6-2008 at 04:14 PM
Old Burnside Ten Penny ale has been my favorite lately. Only comes in 64oz growlers, so its nice to tell my wife I'm only having one beer. Killians
tastes a fuck of alot better on tap than in bottles, and my bartender has been getting barrels of that stuff like its cool lately. The pizza joint/
bar I hang out has 21 beers on tap, 92 different bottles. And the Young's double chocolate stout is usually my last dessert beer.Jason the Magnificent - 11-6-2008 at 04:16 PM

I stopped drinking for a while as of this past saturday, until at least the AF show next thursday.
this thread hurts.random - 11-6-2008 at 08:39 PM
Honestly, I loved some IPAs in the US... strong flavor, very hoppy, usually a decent alcohol %. The IPAs in the UK suck. Flat, bland, and weak. But
it turns out that a 2L of cider is the British equivalent of a 40oz, and I'm enjoying getting hammered on some carbonated apple juice for pocket
change. Overall, dark beer is usually pricey over here... Murphys Stout is cheap, Guinness is more expensive than I expected. Too much watered down,
skunky shit like Fosters and Heineken.
But hey, I can do a round trip flight to Dublin for 20GBP and then take a trip up to the Bushmills Distillery... that might even be cheaper than
buying a bottle here. (And yes, I'm serious.)
Now that I think of it... bombidol, you drive or got friends who do? And you got some empty space for crashing on the floor/couch?Jason the Magnificent - 11-6-2008 at 09:07 PM

I don't think 15 packs exist here in the US......anybody seen one?DAK - 11-7-2008 at 09:26 PM
There are 15 packs down here, but 12 oz. cans.SS76 - 11-7-2008 at 09:27 PM
I've seen the 18s...what comes in 15s?random - 11-7-2008 at 09:43 PM
I never saw 30-packs until moving further up the east coast in the US. UK beer is strange... tall cans (as close as they get to 16oz) and the short
bottles (those annoying ones) are common. But it's cool being in a place where British and Irish beer aren't "imports" but garbage like Bud is.
Though Guinness is still way too expensive. SS76 - 11-7-2008 at 10:01 PM
Good beer ain't cheap, cheap beer ain't good. Friends don't let friends drink bud.SS76 - 11-7-2008 at 10:02 PM

Not always true, but usually is in the States. The draught cans here ain't bad... more than just Guinness is readily available. John Smith's,
Murphys, Tetley (dirt cheap but above average), and some others. The most gut-wrenching shit I've had is the Tenent's 'super strong' crap that's high
in alcohol but tastes worse than Steel Reserve.
But Bud sucks. And I'm amazed it sells for "import" prices here. Silly limeys. Jason the Magnificent - 11-8-2008 at 07:20 PM
Today so far I've enjoyed:
Southern Tier Porter- Solid porter, very rich for a porter, almost at a stout level
Southern Tier Phin and Matts- decent pale ale, not really my thing, like a bit more flavor
Anchor Old Foghorn barley wine- so good. I'm not aware of anchor being capable of doing wrong.

i apologise on behalf of the uk for tennent's super.
that shit is exclusively for tramps and is classed alongside those huuuuge bottles of white cider you see going for like £2 for 4 litres.
i tend to drink Guiness (if i'm hungry), Red Stripe, Corona, Sol, Heineken.
Shit, anything really except Grolsch which I can't stand and Stella Artois which just makes people go mental.
It's nickname over here is 'wifebeater'!. (A friend of mine recently referred to San Miguel as 'senorita beater' haha!
I drink Bud sometimes if I don't wanna get too drunk.random - 11-12-2008 at 09:54 AM
The Tennent's super is gut-wrenching. But there's a different Tennent's that's imported to the US which isn't too bad, so I thought I would take my
chances.
I'm still amazed that Grolsch, Stella, Heineken and the like are really popular here. I was expecting British beers to be much more common, but I
guess not. They all seem to be more pricey and only come in the larger single bottles. But maybe the problem is that I usually buy beer at Tesco.Lucabrasi - 11-12-2008 at 10:34 AM

Went to the Rock Bottom near me last night for a new tapping, 'McMahanahan's Scottish Ale'...solid Scot ale at 8.2% really malty with almost no hops
bite...could do some real damage with this one as you can feel some of the alcohol warming but it goes down smoooooth.
Tried leaving there with a growler of their new stout 'Gibraltar' but they said the NO2 pushed stout doesnt hang with growlers so I had to settle on
Scotty...lifes rough.Voodoobillyman - 11-14-2008 at 02:41 PM

VICTORY BREWING COMPANY
BDx13 - 11-15-2008 at 07:40 PM
First off, it continues to amaze me how you people - who don't even really 'know' - factor in to my day. I'm standing in the beer distributor today,
planning on picking up the usual case of Yuengling for me and Strongbow for my wife, when the thought strikes me, "I oughta pick up a local variety
pack to review for the board." So here we are. (Please understand, I don't know and can't talk about beer like I can whiskey, so I apologize if my
personal comments are a bit pedestrian.)
About Victory ( http://www.victorybeer.com ):
Victory Brewing Company (Victory) is an American brewery located in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1996 by Ron Barchet and Bill Covaleski in an
old Pepperidge Farm bakery, Victory has grown considerably and evolved well outside the traditional small market of a beer brewing restaurant.
Victory's beers, especially HopDevil, Prima Pils and Storm King, have received rave reviews and allowed Victory to move outside their traditional
tri-state market. Victory is currently distributed in 23 states. Another noteworthy item is the variety produced by Victory. Whereas a typical beer
pub produces five or six different beers, Victory brews over 20 beers, providing a huge variety. The restaurant was completely remodeled in spring of
2008 with a new focus on smoked barbecue. A unique growler filler was installed during the renovation that allows any of 20 draft beers to be routed
to the counter-pressure growler filler. This device includes a CO2 evacuation step, thereby vastly increasing the shelf life of the beer compared to
direct spigot filling.
One distinguishing characteristic of Victory is the insistence on using raw whole hops. Most production breweries employ pelletized hops or extracts
due to the increase in storage space and the much lower wort losses during production. Victory also brews using traditional methods where appropriate,
such as using the energy intensive Decoction process for production of certain German style lager biers. Brewhouse is a highly automated, energy
recovery, 50 BBL system made by Rolec in OberBayern, Germany.
The Victory Brewing Company's Sampler with Prima Pils, HopDevil, Golden Monkey and Victory Lager.
Prima Pils: A well reviewed and award winning Pilsner, this beer is hoppier than other pilsners, reminiscent of a European pilsner.
Composition: Malts: 2 row German pilsner malt, Hops: German and Czech whole flowers, Alcohol by volume: 5.3% BD doesn't love a pilsner, so I would rather not have drank this. The things i do for you...
HopDevil: An India Pale Ale at 6.7% ABV, described by the brewer as "menacingly delicious, with the powerful, aromatic punch of whole
flower American hops backed up by rich, German malts." Composition: Malts: Imported, German 2 row
Hops: American whole flowers. Apparently, BD REALLY doesn't like a very hoppy beer. I couldn't finish this, despite the promise of nearly 7% alcohol.
Victory Lager: A classic version of the Munich style Helles bier - think Masskrugs at Hirschgarden. 4.8% ABV. Composition: Malts: 2
row German malts, Hops: German whole flowers. The Victory Lager is the shit. This might be BD's new favorite lager.
Golden Monkey: An Belgian-style ale of high alcohol content, mixed with Asian spices (9.5% ABV). Composition: Malts: 2 row German
malt, Hops: European whole flowers, Yeast: imported, of Belgian origin. BD is digging the Golden Monkey. Starts very traditional, smooth, maybe a little thick. The spice is subtle, but definitely sets it apart from
the norm. THis is real good, and delivering a sold buzz.
Three and a half beers in, BD has a ttrong buzz going, and that's wat counts. i will absolutely be consuming a few more golden monkeys this senving.JawnDiablo - 11-15-2008 at 08:21 PM
Victory is great BD.
probably my favorite PA beer.

if you'll come qlll the ayw aout to downingtown, we should absolutely do that.
is tha too far for a weeknight trip?
if so, next weekend is open for the BD family.
not sure ifi can get down with the storm king. probebaly too much hops for me.
"Storm King Stout: US example of Russian Imperial Stout. Very hoppy and strong. 9.1% ABV."BDx13 - 11-15-2008 at 09:31 PM
