Most Recognizable Guitar Riff?

CR83 - 12-5-2008 at 10:41 AM

I was thinking about this and the most recognizable riffs I can think of are either "Smoke on the Water" or "Start Me Up" by the Stones.

I'm thinking along the lines of the general public. What riff would they hear and be able to recognize the song.

Thoughts?

Walk and South of Heaven

XnMeX - 12-5-2008 at 11:03 AM

Cat Scratch Fever maybe...

Iron Man?

defstarsteve - 12-5-2008 at 11:20 AM

reign in blood

BKT - 12-5-2008 at 11:35 AM

Smoke on the Water.

MM.

XnMeX - 12-5-2008 at 12:14 PM

Reign in blood and south of heaven don't for for most people. Hell, I wouldn't even know them. Yeah, I know...

I think Iron Man would probably be it. Smoke on the water alot of people seem to know the riff but not the song / who it's from or just think it's that "beavis & Buthead" song.

Oooh Cat Scratch Fever. Good call.

Crazy Train may be up there.

Discipline - 12-5-2008 at 01:36 PM

I could see something from AC/DC on that list.

Dave - 12-5-2008 at 02:51 PM

van halen - panama

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:09 PM

the trooper.

end of story.

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:11 PM

new sensation - INXS.

that riff is pounded into your head in that song. Like a really leaky faucet that has a pulse.

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:15 PM

PAPA DON'T TAKE NO MESS - James Brown. Love that song, love the riff and it is sampled out the ass by musicians. It never changes. Constant throughout the song. Its beating you in the head and all you can do is nod to the rhythm.

That being said THE PAYBACK by James Brown. That riff is monster as well.

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:17 PM

I WALK THE LINE - J CASH

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:19 PM

TOO YOUNG TO FALL IN LOVE- Motley Crue.

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:22 PM

THE NEEDLE AND THE DAMAGE DONE- Neil Young

Great song with good acoustic riffs.

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:23 PM

UNKNOWN LEGEND - Neil Young.

One of the greatest releases in history. Love this record. This song has a fucking simple, but direct riff. Melody.

clevohardcore - 12-5-2008 at 03:24 PM

I know I am way off topic, but this THREAD is kick ass. Some of those songs may not be the SMOKE ON THE WATER, but great none the less with killer riffs.

JawnDiablo - 12-5-2008 at 03:27 PM

something from hendrix maybe.

sunshine of your love

JawnDiablo - 12-5-2008 at 05:09 PM

so when you say general public, i take it you mean everyone, and not necessarily dudes that listen to mostly metal and hardcore punk right?
cus I'm pretty sure there is at least a Beatles song or something from the 60s that whould surpass Slayer as most recognized. Not saying that South of Heaven or Raining Blood wouldn't pop in my head for the metal end of it, but you know....

BDx13 - 12-5-2008 at 05:35 PM

yeah, it's gotta be the beatles or the stones or elvis or james brown or some thing.

tireironsaint - 12-5-2008 at 06:30 PM

Possibly The Stones, Satisfaction?
I'm sure there's plenty out there that are instantly recognizable to a huge chunk of the population, but I'd be willing to guess that almost nothing from "top 40" radio stuff from the last ten years would make the list.

There's actually quite a bit of stuff in this thread that I'm sure I wouldn't recognize even if you played the whole song for me.

XnMeX - 12-5-2008 at 06:31 PM

I've got it! Wild thing! Whoever the fuck does that song. I bet most of the public would know that song title from the main riff.

Six66Mike - 12-5-2008 at 06:41 PM

AC/DC - Thunderstruck
Slayer - South of Heaven & Seasons in the Abyss
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
Black Sabbath - Iron Man
Nirvana - Nevermind & All Apologies

BDx13 - 12-5-2008 at 06:46 PM
