Bush's first exit interview

pulled out the best part for you and highlighted the best of that... http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/12/01/bush-i-was-unp...

but let's paraphrase slightly to make it clear:

Bush: 'Oh, you mean what would've happened if our load of shit about those WMDs was true... fuck yeah, we would've attacked. Abso-fucking-lutely!'

Gibson: 'No, I mean what if you knew it was bullshit ahead of time.'

Bush: ' Goddamn, did I just admit we knew our intelligence was a lie that we knowingly pretended was accurate? Fuck me, at least I can retire soon. Uh, but to answer your question... fuck if I know. I mean, shit Charlie, it's hard to pretend now that I didn't know the whole time they didn't have WMDs. So, really, I can't answer that question... it's one of those hypotheticals where you can't really imagine it ever being the case... of course I knew he didn't have WMDs. How would I have reacted if I actually believed that he had them, even though he didn't? Shit, I know that's the story we sold to the public, but that was a giant fucking lie. I have no idea what would've happened if I genuinely believed that he had WMDs.'

Mr. Gibson: You’ve always said there’s no do-overs as President. If you had one?

Mr. Bush: I don’t know — the biggest regret of all the presidency has to have been the intelligence failure in Iraq. A lot of people put their reputations on the line and said the weapons of mass destruction is a reason to remove Saddam Hussein. It wasn’t just people in my administration; a lot of members in Congress, prior to my arrival in Washington D.C., during the debate on Iraq, a lot of leaders of nations around the world were all looking at the same intelligence. And, you know, that’s not a do-over, but I wish the intelligence had been different, I guess.

Mr. Gibson: If the intelligence had been right, would there have been an Iraq war?

Mr. Bush: Yes, because Saddam Hussein was unwilling to let the inspectors go in to determine whether or not the U.N. resolutions were being upheld. In other words, if he had had weapons of mass destruction, would there have been a war? Absolutely.

Mr. Gibson: No, if you had known he didn’t.

Mr. Bush: Oh, I see what you’re saying. You know, that’s an interesting question. That is a do-over that I can’t do. It’s hard for me to speculate.

I wish I had something funny to say to this, but the whole thing just makes me sick and sad.

I’ll be frank with you. I don’t spend a lot of time really worrying about short-term history. I guess I don’t worry about long-term history, either, since I’m not going to be around to read it

Brilliant! 4 more years! :tumble:
