Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

the clash

clevohardcore - 12-18-2008 at 11:01 PM

please rate the records as best to least best. I am new ot them and finally picked up COMBAT ROCK. I wan tot grab more but would like some guidance.

tireironsaint - 12-18-2008 at 11:20 PM

Combat Rock is pretty far down their list, by that point it really wasn't the same band at all. They had some big hits from that record, but in kind of an 80's MTV sort of way. A GREAT overview of them is the Clash On Broadway set.You can get it pretty cheap and it has a huge amount of fantastic stuff. I really wouldn't recommend going anywhere near Sandanista unless you suddenly become an enormous fan of all things Clash. There are some great songs on there, but they're buried between a bit too much experimenting for most people's taste. If you wanna get a good feel for them in the straight album format, I'd recommend their self titled or London Calling, I go back and forth between those two as my favorite records of theirs. If you aren't so much chained to whole albums though, let me again recommend Clash On Broadway. That collection is amazing from start to finish and has almost every song you need from them.

i couldn't put it any better though i will say give 'em enough rope is a highly underrated album.

Dave - 12-18-2008 at 11:37 PM

London Calling
s/t
give em enough rope

thats my favorites in order

clevohardcore - 12-18-2008 at 11:42 PM

give them enough rope was used for $7. I'll grab it tomorrow. I'll look for CLASH ON BROADWAY, but I don't member seeing it today. I got to say the songs I was aware of on combat rock are good, but I some of the others I was not feeling.

Thanks for the info all ya'll. I know many of you are fans for I figured I'd the experts.

tireironsaint - 12-19-2008 at 12:07 AM

Give 'Em Enough Rope is really great it just feels a little less "accessible" for some reason. I almost listed it in my original post, but just didn't really think it was the album to recommend to a new listener.

joey - 12-19-2008 at 12:14 AM

s/t
london calling
most of the ''live'' stuff you cant go wrong with. have you ever heard his solo stuff or his band, the mescaleros?

tireironsaint - 12-19-2008 at 12:24 AM

The Mescaleros stuff is really hit or miss for me. They have some songs I think are pure brilliance and shining moments for Joe, but a lot of their stuff is just too much. I can only take so much world beat fusion no matter who is behind it. The version of Redemption Song that he did with Johnny Cash gives me chills, the version that's just him is pretty amazing too. That's actually one of about five Bob Marley songs that I think are actually good and not just more overrated crap from the rasta poster boy.

tireironsaint - 12-19-2008 at 12:28 AM

This thread has totally made me realize that it's been too long since I listened to much Clash. I'm taking Clash On Broadway with me to the shop tomorrow. Well, if I'm not snowed in, that is.... of course, if I am snowed in, then I can just play my Clash records and sit around the house.

clevohardcore - 12-19-2008 at 01:08 AM

I'll grab LONDON CALLING too since it seems to be a consensus. I'll comb through my cd's and see if I got some I'll trade in to grab it. Money is tight, but I am hurtin for some newly discovered old tunes that I have missed out on throughout the years.

Discipline - 12-19-2008 at 01:45 AM

Clash on Broadway is a perfect look at the band.

clevo - check your u2u

upyerbum - 12-19-2008 at 11:27 AM

There's a singles collection out there too, its cheaper and a pretty rounded view of their material. On a side note, "Hitsville UK" should be a Christmas song.

CR83 - 12-19-2008 at 11:35 AM

Get the Live Album. It doesn't have great flow but man, some of those songs are incredible.

DeathByForce - 12-20-2008 at 12:33 AM

Combat Rock has two of the best songs by the clash.
Straight To Hell
and
Know Your Rights

agreed

They're surely not disco, but I really can't stand the Clash.

Years of arty douchebags touting them as the best thing to happen to music has poisoned me against the band.

Obviously, you people aren't arty, and you're far from douchebags, but sometimes I'll grow to hate a band simply because the majority of its fans annoy the piss outta me. That ever happen for anyone else?

See also: The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Beatles

ya need to get past that kind of stuff cuz in some cases ya end up missing out on some really good music.
the clash the beatles and the stones for example.
i did that sort of thing when i was younger.
now i want everything and anything i can get out of music of all kinds.
at this point i dont care who listens to what, if its good, its good.
