BRIDGEWATER, Nova Scotia: A tearful mother who appeared before TV cameras across Canada begging for the return of her missing daughter pleaded guilty
Friday to second-degree murder in her 12-year-old daughter's death.
Penny Boudreau, 34, was charged in the killing of her only child, Karissa, who was reported missing Jan. 27, 2008, in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia.
Two days later, the mother appealed to the public on national TV for help in finding the girl as search crews scoured a river and wooded area close to
the family's home.
The girl's frozen remains were found by a passerby Feb. 9 on the bank of the LeHave River, on the outskirts of Bridgewater.
Boudreau was sentenced Friday to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 20 years.
"I'm sorry," Boudreau told the court, speaking in a near whisper.
Prosecutor Paul Scovil told the court that Boudreau strangled her daughter with a length of twine after the 34-year-old woman was given an ultimatum
by her boyfriend.
Reading from an agreed statement of facts, Scovil said boyfriend Vernon Macumber told Boudreau that it was either him or her daughter if their
relationship was to survive. Macumber has not been charged in the case.
In her TV appeal to the public, a weeping Boudreau said the pair had gone to a local grocery store and Karissa stayed in the car. When she returned,
the child was gone, she said.
According to the statement read in court, Scovil said Boudreau admitted going to the store with Karissa. She then drove her daughter to a nearby road
and told Karissa to get out of the car.
They argued and Boudreau tackled her daughter to the ground.
"Karissa said, 'Mommy, don't.'" Scovil told the court as people in the public gallery sobbed.
Scovil said Boudreau pinned her daughter to the ground with her knees, wrapped the twine around her neck and strangled her.
She dragged the body back to the car, put the twine in an empty coffee cup and threw it away.
Boudreau then rolled Karissa's body down a nearby riverbank, discarding some articles of clothing in a garbage can to make it appear as if the girl
had been the victim of a sexual assault.
Police became suspicious of the mother when witnesses reported that they had seen no suspicious activity in the store parking lot at the time the girl
supposedly disappeared.
Boudreau was arrested in Halifax and charged last June. Her daughter's disappearance shook the small town of 8,000 near Nova Scotia's South Shore,
which held a memorial service for Karissa on the anniversary of her disappearance this week.BDx13 - 1-30-2009 at 02:41 PM

I remember seeing the mother on TV sobbing about, trying to find her missing daughter, and feeling bad for her, for her missing child...
Really i feel bad for the father of the child, because his piece of shit ex, killed his daughter, because she would rather live without her child than
live without her boyfriend.....clevohardcore - 1-30-2009 at 03:06 PM

Australian Throws Daughter Off Bridge to Death, Police Say
Thursday, January 29, 2009
Jan. 29: West Gate Bridge in Melbourne, Australia, where a four-year-old girl was thrown.
A father allegedly threw his four-year-old daughter off a bridge in front of the girl's two young brothers and scores of motorists during rush hour in
Melbourne today.
Witnesses said Arthur Phillip Freeman, 35, suddenly stopped his family car – which also had his two young sons inside – and, with young Darcey Iris in
his arms, walked to the side of the West Gate Bridge, just after 9 a.m.
He then allegedly dropped his young daughter over the railing and into the water, 190 feet below.
Shocked drivers who witnessed the incident – which police say occurred in a matter of seconds – immediately called emergency hotlines as Freeman
reportedly got back in the large white family Land Cruiser, and drove away.
Darcey miraculously survived the fall and was pulled from the water by police within 10 minutes and ambulance officers spent the next 50 minutes
resuscitating her on the bank on the side of the Yarra River.
She was then airlifted by helicopter to the nearby Royal Children’s Hospital in a critical condition and treated for the next four hours.
The tragedy gripped Australia as it unfolded on television, with footage of paramedics frantically trying to resuscitate Darcey on the riverbank
streamed during regular news bulletins with updates on the little girl’s condition.
Freeman was arrested by police an hour after the tragic incident when he was spotted, accompanied by his two sons, Benjamin, 7, and Jack, 23 months,
in a “visibly distressed” state outside the Commonwealth Law Courts across town in central Melbourne. The family had been in the midst of a custody
battle.
Security staff at the court said that Freeman was shaking like a leaf, and staring with wild eyes when they spotted him and alerted police. Police,
initially unaware he was involved in the bridge incident, said they took him into custody peacefully.
As he was being led away, Freeman reportedly begged court staff to "take care of my kids.''
“He was pretty down and he had the two other children with him and he tried to enter the court. He couldn't talk to anyone, he wouldn't talk to
anyone, he was just a mess,'' witness Vince Mascia told the Nine Network.
As Freeman was being questioned by detectives, Darcey died in hospital from massive internal injuries.
Her father was then charged with murder and set to appear before a criminal court. However he was deemed "suicidal" by psychiatrists and remanded in
custody. He will next appear in court on May 21 for a committal hearing. Dave - 1-30-2009 at 03:25 PM
