Heading to NYC for the first time... Suggestions?

Hey guys and gals, my girlfriend invited me to go to NYC with her since she has been there tons of times and I never have (drove thru on a bus, thats it) so I am REALLY excited.

Any suggestions on what is "not to be missed" and what is "overhyped and should be missed"?

I fucking hate NYC. Everytime I go there something horrable happens in my life.
Even when I had to stop there for a layover comming home, my flight out was fucking canceled.

I'm kind of stating the obvious I guess- but central park's really nice, especially if you're going with a lady friend.
