I use Avast anti-virus for my computer and it's worked perfectly since I started using it 6-8 months ago. My problem now is that I have a Trojan
virus (long story but I know it's there) and Avast isn't picking up on it. Any suggestions?

Try AVG Mike, its free and works well.
