computer hell

jonnynewbreed - 3-31-2009 at 01:35 PM

I need to run Internet Explorer on my mac in order to update our companies new website. The last IE for mac was done years ago and doesn't have the right guts to run the flash/active x shit that our new site uses.

What the fuck am I to do?

is the mac you're using relatively new?

if so, there is an application called bootcamp that comes w/ osx that allows you to boot the machine into other operating systems. http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/bootcamp.html

just buy vista, boot the mac using boot camp and you're good to go using IE.

full disclosure...

i've never actually used bootcamp, but i do something similar almost every day.
i use a third party program called VMWare Fusion that allows me to run OSX and Vista simultaneously.
i can literally alt-tab from one os to the other.
(actually, i uses the OSX feature 'Spaces' to keep them separate http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/spaces.html )
it solves the occasional need to access windows browsers, but it still makes me feel dirty!

i'm trying some other app. It's ies4osx...i'm a bit confused and really frustrated. Drinks after work for me

not working. fack.

BDx13 - 3-31-2009 at 03:25 PM

read up on boot camp tonight.
should be pretty seamless.
the only criticism i've heard is that you have to reboot to switch OSes.
(hence the popularity of Parallels and Fusion.)
you'll have to spend a few bucks on vista, but it could be worse.

Why do you need IE to edit a website? That's the part I don't get.

BDx13 - 3-31-2009 at 10:27 PM

i think the cms his company is using relies on active x controls.

jonnynewbreed - 4-1-2009 at 06:21 AM

The site views fine with all browsers but the CMS only works with IE and since I run a mac i'm fucked. There are enough PC's in my office for me to use so i'm just going to do that. I'm not really responsible for keeping it updated daily so it's not that big of a deal, just frustrating.

BDx13 - 4-1-2009 at 07:17 AM

i forget, was this a custom application or off the shelf? if the latter, what's it called?

Six66Mike - 4-1-2009 at 07:52 AM

lol that sounds like a horrible cms.

Dave - 4-1-2009 at 08:12 AM

who the fuck uses IE anyways?

jonnynewbreed - 4-1-2009 at 11:10 AM

don't get me started. We had to threaten this website company with a lawsuit as they were a year late on their delivery. Now we have it up and going so this is a minor issue compared to the cluster fuck that it has been. The CMS sucks and is so counter intuitive that you need to read a frigging manual that's as thick as a phone book to understand it.

And before we go and make funny quips just be aware that this shit has had me up nights and stressed the fuck out. In hindsight I would have done something different but I can't change anything at this point.

Site looks great though and does function so it's not all bad. Check it: www.musicnovascotia.ca
