Agreed. I think they're a watered down, overblown rip off of a lot of much better bands who've been doing the stripped down thing for a lot longer.

They've never claimed to be a super authentic down and dirty roots blues act. They're a great rock/pop band who play in that style. Jack White is a fantastic songwriter, which is the reason they're as popular as they are, as opposed to the bands who are more authentic, been around longer, etc (many of whom I like), aren't.
They've also been doing this since 97, which I realize in the scope of blues, isn't that long, but it's not like they hopped on a trend. In reality, they resparked a huge interest in old school style blues. I once said, and still believe, that he's one of the better songwriters of his era and will have a very long career. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see him still atop the musical world in another 15-20 years due to his amazing writing skills.

i think they're great.

Not a big fan, but I won't argue that Jack White is an extrememly talented songwriter.

^^^^^^^^^ Could not agree more. J Whit eie really that good. Dude has a ear for tunes. He is taking simple and making it special. Not to mention White Stripes are only a part of his catalogue. THE RACOUNTEERS are even more expanded with a complete band. NOt to mention his collaborations with several "old school" musicians and singers. LOretta Lynn, Beck, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, among others.

never listened to them, but i remember years ago when they were playing a show at a crappy university club (which i'm sure means they got a good guarantee and a bad turnout) and someone was excited to see them and described them as stripped-down garage rock. so i'll agree that they didn't just jump on a trend.

not so sure i'd like them if i sat down and listened to them, which is why i didn't go to that show for free.

white blood cells is a solid cd
so is icky thump

tireironsaint - 4-12-2009 at 07:26 PM

Not really trying to say they're jumping on a trend or changing their style to fit a certain sound, but they just strike me as the radio friendly, commercial version of better bands that even Jack White has acknowledged as influences on him. Can he write a solid hook? Undoubtedly. That doesn't change the fact that his music (for any of the bands I've heard him in) just doesn't really do much for me. It's head and shoulders above the vast majority of the crap that gets played on the radio these days, but that's not saying much of anything.

Haven't heard much of their music but really haven't cared for the stuff I've heard. Yes its catchy but I just don't care for it.

Mark Lind - 4-12-2009 at 10:10 PM

I'm a fan.

The Racounteers are pretty awesome. Again, great tunes.
That Loretta Lynn record is great, too. I should dig that out.
I like the Dead Weather stuff I've heard.

clevohardcore - 4-13-2009 at 02:08 AM

Not sure what to make of that band THE KILLS.
