Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

Gimme some heavy bands that aren't tough guy bands

BDx13 - 4-28-2009 at 09:56 PM

Thorp and I have been talking about this...
Bands that have a real heavy and hard sound..
But that aren't tough guy in their image or message.

JawnDiablo - 4-28-2009 at 09:59 PM

Napalm Death

MarkV - 4-28-2009 at 10:04 PM

Are you looking for more HC type stuff, or just in general?

Crowbar
EyeHateGod
Tragedy
Napalm Death (like juan said)
Brutal Truth
Converge

CR83 - 4-28-2009 at 10:20 PM

Palehorse?
Earth Crisis- I know I'll get shit for this one
All Out War- never thought of them as Tough Guy
Killing The Dream

BDx13 - 4-28-2009 at 10:27 PM

hardcore.
and preferably smaller bands.
well, not smaller, but up and comers.
as in, bands we should be checking out.
ya know?
down to nothing, my turn to win come to mind.
KTD is a great example.
I encouraged thorp to go after them from the moment i heard their demo in 2003.

clevohardcore - 4-28-2009 at 10:49 PM

im so out of it. I have no idea anymore.

betrayed
comeback kid

not sure if that's what your meaning.

random - 4-29-2009 at 12:09 AM

not so much a thorp band, but maybe for SGR... www.myspace.com/luckyscars seems like they just recorded a new album if Andy/Thorp is really interested.

panzerkreuzer - 4-29-2009 at 01:57 AM

mattybar - 4-29-2009 at 05:16 AM

Jason the Magnificent - 4-29-2009 at 05:28 AM

Every
Day
Dollars.

Best band in hardcore.

Six66Mike - 4-29-2009 at 05:43 AM

To The Lions from Hamilton are really good, check out Baptism of Fire.

Hit List & Stronghold were 2 really good, hard Aussie bands that called it quits a couple years ago.

Most of the stuff I listen to is 90's and early 00's though. Day of Mourning!

shouldnīt there be a new record in the works?

Jason the Magnificent - 4-29-2009 at 06:07 AM

I hope so. Though that EP was so good I could probably live off that forever.

XHonusWagnerX - 4-29-2009 at 06:39 AM

DROPDEAD
DEADGUY

3rdDistrict - 4-29-2009 at 07:27 AM

STOUT

Jason the Magnificent - 4-29-2009 at 08:11 AM

While stout isn't yo yo nigga tough guy....it is pretty tough guy. songs about the warrior class and castrating nazis so they'll never breed isn't exactly emo.

I love stout.

clevohardcore - 4-29-2009 at 08:20 AM

BURY YOUR DEAD - Didn't they always dress up in suits and play and I think they made a couple records with titles from movies or something.
A DAY TO REMEMBER - look like a bunch of weak basement Star Wars fans, but supposedly play hardcore.

Woodie - 4-29-2009 at 08:44 AM

BKT - 4-29-2009 at 12:23 PM

MM.

Boozehound - 4-29-2009 at 04:52 PM

Check out DRAGO (x-Darkbuster). They are heavy but there lyrics are not!!
www.myspace.com/dragoboston

DaveMoral - 4-29-2009 at 11:03 PM

Man, I couldn't ever fully vibe on First Blood.

MarkV - 4-29-2009 at 11:19 PM

Alpha and Omega

I'm assuming BD and Thorp are looking for bands who haven't broken up or aren't bigger labels already, no?

bombidol - 4-29-2009 at 11:24 PM

Wisdom in Chains, not so much up and coming though really. 50 Lions?

barc0debaby - 4-29-2009 at 11:26 PM

Alpha and Omega put on a great show. Their singers has got some mean pipes!

www.myspace.com/alphaandomegahc

BDx13 - 4-29-2009 at 11:38 PM

^ what mark said.

panzerkreuzer - 4-30-2009 at 12:26 AM

dead and dying. hardest stuff i heard in the last time.

clevohardcore - 4-30-2009 at 01:22 AM

supertouch.

I wish they would get back together.

Six66Mike - 4-30-2009 at 05:45 AM

50 Lions for sure. The Omegas from Montreal are good too.

Markcasey - 4-30-2009 at 08:20 AM

the dead kennedys ?

bon jovi :frog:

bombidol - 4-30-2009 at 08:33 AM

Got to see 50 Lions in Dublin the other night. Was sweet. Bane then a week before.

Six66Mike - 5-2-2009 at 08:40 PM

Penty of good bands from Ontario as well.

To The Lions - http://www.tothelions.ca/
They played in Baltimore a while ago, pretty sure for Jersey Mike Fest 2. Not sure if they are still around, don't think they have a myspace page at all but the album is great. Might fall under the tough guy banner though ;)

Urban Blight - http://www.myspace.com/urbanblight

RAH - http://www.myspace.com/wearerah

Fortune Teller - http://www.myspace.com/fortunetellerhardcore
Past members of The Kill Decibel, Risky Business and others, another that probably falls under the tough guy banner.

Eating Glass - http://www.myspace.com/eatingglasshc
Very much in the vein of Cursed/Pulling Teeth with an album cover by Jeff Beckman that screams Pulling Teeth.

Omegas - http://www.myspace.com/omegasmtl
From Montreal, mentioned them before but here's their link.

A century damn, thanks for the mention you bastards. :wink1:

What is this thread about plucking some band from hardcore obscurity for a Thorp release? I didn’t think they released bands anymore.

XHonusWagnerX - 5-4-2009 at 08:10 PM

BITTER!

I didnt think of them before, but thats a good one!

Discipline - 5-4-2009 at 08:22 PM

Jason mentioned them in the other thread, Cheech.

BDx13 - 5-4-2009 at 10:04 PM

tone... it's been quiet, but stay tuned.

i remember that show. not sure if i was with franklo or jack from edgewise, but we did a drive by of the club, saw that line and were like 'fuck no'.

hardtone - 5-4-2009 at 11:13 PM

You guys should release a old school style comp with unsigned bands (hint, hint)...:tumble:

XHonusWagnerX - 5-5-2009 at 06:02 AM

Im gonna say BITTER again just because I listened to them on my way into work.

Jason the Magnificent - 5-5-2009 at 07:53 AM

Has Thorp ever done a comp?

BDx13 - 5-5-2009 at 08:25 AM

yes, five, in fact.
but all way back in the day.

Fighting Music vol 1 & 2 were join comps w/ Deathwish & B9
War Music vol 1 was Thorp and Stillborn
War Music vol 2 was Thorp, Hand of Hope and Eulogy
Hard Working Music vol 1 was Thorp only.

XHonusWagnerX - 5-5-2009 at 09:00 AM

which comp(s) had Slapshot on it? I'm not sure if I have a copy of that or not.

Jason the Magnificent - 5-5-2009 at 09:52 AM

May be splitting hairs, but weren't those all just free promos of already existing Thorp stuff?

BDx13 - 5-5-2009 at 10:10 AM

yes, you are correct.
hairs well split!
the distinction never occurred to me.

BDx13 - 5-5-2009 at 10:11 AM

slapshot was on war music vol 2.
i don't think i have any left.

I'll have to look and see if I have it....

XHonusWagnerX - 5-5-2009 at 10:13 AM

haha... forgot that my list is online... I got it! : )

BDx13 - 5-5-2009 at 10:17 AM

it must come up on ebay every once and a while. there aren't any rare tracks, so someone like yourself that collects everything should be able to pick it up cheap.

Yes, in the tomes of hardcore nerdery those'd be samplers. I was thinking of comp comp's like Wild Things etc.

BDx13 - 5-5-2009 at 11:41 AM

yeah, you're right, i just wasn't thinking it through when i replied.
a proper comp is FAR more work than we'd be willing to put into a release.
HA!

Jason the Magnificent - 5-5-2009 at 12:27 PM

yeah i wouldn't recommend it. a logistic nightmare...a sales nightmare usually...and too many bands to organize on a set schedule. ngs did way too many and probably part of the reason i soured on the label....before the final souring from neglect.

mattybar - 5-6-2009 at 09:33 AM

if it any's consoloation jason, NGS is/was without a doubt one of my favourite labels in recent years.
i'd have never heard Insult To Injury without your efforts!

i can testify how difficult it is to do a comp too. we've only done one 'proper' comp for Rucktion and it took about four years to make it a reality.

panzerkreuzer - 5-8-2009 at 09:01 AM

Nay Sayer!! their 7" is really hard stuff.
best quote, "this is not a good bye, this is i hate you" :)
best single i heard this year!

Really, so many great comps from the past & now no one would even attempt one today.

tireironsaint - 5-10-2009 at 02:49 AM

My suggestion for this topic.... Damage Case. http://www.myspace.com/damagecase Some former members of Spazm 151 in there although aside from playing fast as fuck and being fucking great in general, I wouldn't say the two bands have much in common.

ThisThat - 5-11-2009 at 03:48 AM

The Lion Of Wall Street (www.myspace.com/tlowtx)
Grave Robbers (www.myspace.com/graverobberstx)

panzerkreuzer - 5-18-2009 at 12:39 PM

Borrowed Time. they even cover entombed!

mattybar - 5-18-2009 at 02:05 PM

Stout dropped Wolverine Blues when they played London recently.
It came out of nowhere and I just remember seeing tons of kids faces light up as soon as Tad announced it.

panzerkreuzer - 5-18-2009 at 02:37 PM

great.
everyone should cover entombed.

btw, do you have already a release date for the injury time cd? i canīt wait to hear it.

Six66Mike - 5-24-2009 at 03:27 PM

Hardey They Fall is a new band from Southern Ontario that has released their first album online. I've re-hosted it because megaupload sucks. This will be taken down soon, limited time freebie :) http://fastsh.it/Harder%20They%20Fall.rar

BDx13 - 5-24-2009 at 10:34 PM

DL'ed.
thanks!

Six66Mike - 5-25-2009 at 06:54 AM

I just got the new Urban Blight 12" in flac format, I can send you that if you are interested. I posted their link earlier, haven't had time to listen to it yet but I can transcode it to mp3 to make it smaller before sending.

hopefully july or august man
the majority of the recording is all done.
just sorting out artwork and final mix and all that shit.
we're really happy with the way it's sounding at the moment though so i'm just as keen to get it all done.
