All these films to me seem like a new marketing scam on
the younger generation.It seems to be a in thing to be straight edge now.I still think edge is cool,but so is kickin back with your homies drinking cold ones.Just because you drink or smoke dosent mean you dont have control of yourself.Ive met x edge assholes and drunk drug addict assholes.Only difference is one choice is cheaper!;)In philly we had all types of folks in our scene

That makes sense to me. Seems like the younger set is still out there yelling to find their identity a bit then us old dudes get comfortable with who we are and have less to yell about about much less our lifestyle.

I tell my daughter her and I are straight edge all the time especially when we are listening to Minor Threat and Uniform Choice. She's 4 and I'm sober 1.5 years. Who knows though.

Maybe. But it's not just me being older that's given me that impression... this was before I even really left hardcore to become an adult, if you will.

I got into hardcore like 97-98 and by 99-00 the whole straight edge scene seemed on the decline.

I've been looking at this straight edge forum this week, and it's about the slowest forum I've been to with the least interesting topics on the web. Pretty lame.

I'd watch this if they were interviewing all the original sXe bands to get their view on what it meant to them then and now. Then interview all the new jack edge bands and compare and contrast their answers.

Probably wouldn't be all that different with the exception of like Minor Threat... and Ian's had plenty of say on the subject. There were dudes that were pretty in your face about it even at the start, as far as I'm aware.

Besides, there's been alot of blowback within the straight edge scene against the more "militant" "hate edge" kinda dudes.

the fact that Ian is going "uhhh.No?..." only makes me like him,again...i'll admit that when he started doing the whole Fugazi thing,and what-not, - I turned my head...i just did not dig the music that a lot of those cat's were trying to espouse...

i've seen Minor Threat 5-6 times,at least...and,yeah -THEY WERE FUCKING GREAT! - but.when it ws over,i'll give Ian (as well as whomever else from the fold) much respect for burying it and NEVER REVIVING IT out of the respect that they not only talked about,nor gave due,but for realizing that it was not what they wanted to do,anymore..

it'll be 5 years since I buried Sheer Terror,this coming October...and.- not that i'm "insulted",by any means - I WILL PROBABLY NEVER HEAR THE ENDS OF THE "RESPECT" (the quotation marks ARE there for a reason...) that people have NOW for the band...that make's me "bitter,"old-sschool",and EXPECTED._)...

trust me,my H/C punk rockin'n SKINHEAD thug - NOTHING I WILL EVER DO WILL BE "EXPECTED"....

You bring up a great point Paul. When MT was buried, it stayed buried. I was never lucky or hip enough to see them back in the day but man, I'd kill to see them now.

It could be interesting. Plus, the majority of the quotes are obviously in reference to a tendency amongst young punks and hardcore kids that do get wasted to really go all out on that shit. Which was why the whole straight edge thing ever came to be... a reaction against that. No one sees people drinking in moderation when they are young and says "fuck all that, I'm staying away from that for life" we see the worst examples of drug or alcohol use and want to stay clear of that perhaps because there's a possibility of becoming one of those who goes the furthest. Shit, my family has a history of alcoholism... on both sides of my family. My uncle used to come over to my house drunk and offer to buy my beagle. I had friends that really fucked themselves up with drugs. And even that wasn't something that made me become straight edge... probably part of it. I just never got into that shit. I claimed straight edge because I'd never done drugs or drank in my life and yet I felt like a loser and an outcast and straight edge gave me a place where I fit in.

Some people just saw their peers getting fucked up and ruining their lives. I know people who were smack addicts that went into recovery and then got into straight edge because it was something to keep them from going into that hole again.

I don't think any teenager has much of a concept of moderation, straight edge or not. So as a thing that most people get into in their youth, of course there's no concept of "moderation" in their dealings with that shit and their motivations for calling themselves straight edge and staying straight... as we get older we realize people can and do drink without getting drunk or without getting drunk every time they drink. Or smoke a little weed now and then and don't become total burnouts. Other drugs, I think, are a little harder even claim anyone does in moderation. Just because of the addicting nature of most illegal drugs.

Anyways, rant over. Part of that was about some of the comments on the YouTube link...

Also, clevo, I think the band they showed was Have Heart.

I have both HAVE HEART cds. Good stuff. The second one is a little slow in places though plus its a little hard to relate to s kid whining about his parents in the songs when you have kids yourself. When I jam them out I think GET A JOB BRO. YOUR PARENTS PROBABLY ARE PISSED THAT YOU STARTED A BAND. THEY SPENT ALL THAT MONEY ON COLLEGE AND THIS IS WHAT YOU DO WITH IT?
