start with the trojan records box sets
they are 3 cds each and cheap....like $16.99 each
they have themes
like the rudeboy box set
the skinhead reggae box set
the ska boxset
ect

all the trojan stuff i have heard is KILLER

also desmond dekker is a MUST HAVE
even more so then the trojan stuff

Discipline - 5-10-2005 at 05:44 PM

Desmond Dekker, some of Judge Dredd's stuff, and most definately the Trojan label's output.

Sorry to yell.

clevohardcore - 5-11-2005 at 12:01 PM

So it seems the older I have gotten the more I enjoy it.

defstarsteve - 5-11-2005 at 01:22 PM

english beat rules...
and not that they count
but I love me some fishbone....

gavin - 5-11-2005 at 01:35 PM

thre specials are the most true to the old stuff i think
they did alot of covers of old songs and did them well
a message to you rudy is exactly like the old version

This man knows his shit, that's a great start for anyone looking for good stuff. Also, as BadVibes said, the Trojan box sets are awesome. Back home at one record store they had a shelf with about twenty different Trojan box sets and that wasn't even all of 'em.

soulless - 5-11-2005 at 02:53 PM

i listen to a lot of the stuff mentioned here, especially the specials and desmond dekker, but i like some more recent stuff too. the pietasters, the toasters, chris murray.

JawnDiablo - 5-11-2005 at 05:43 PM

picked up 3 double cd sets called skarmageddon 1-4 on amazon for $2 each...great stuff like 40 bands per set

skatelites
augustus pablo
lee perry
specials
allot of cool old stuff really crosses over into different genres like lee perry

clevohardcore - 5-11-2005 at 07:22 PM

I saw the PIETASTERS w/ MURPHYS LAW a few months back. I even tlaked to the drummer for a bit. I had never heard of them or anything and the guy was cool and we had a beer and bullshitted about music and watched some opening shitty band. THat was it. I watched them for about 15 minutes then i had to jet. They were cool. Jimmy Gestapo seemed to really like them. NOt exactly my thing but they were not bad.

JawnDiablo - 5-11-2005 at 09:06 PM

saw Murphys Law on friday with reverend horton heat and supersuckers...they always put on a great show..jimmy is a piss on stage

Discipline - 5-11-2005 at 11:21 PM

Jimmy is one of the best frontmen ever.

Ska band worth checking out is Johnny Too Bad & The Strikeouts.

Dave - 5-12-2005 at 07:01 AM

for newer bands you gotta check out:

The slackers
hepcat
deals gone bad
heavy step
bluebeat stompers
the robustos
bim skala bim
ska flames
stubborn all-stars
scofflaws

jonnynewbreed - 5-15-2005 at 10:49 AM

I was gonna say that Dave and Brian are huge collectors and historians of Ska musics "checkered" past. If any of you need good recomendations these are the dudes to talk to for sure.

soulless - 5-15-2005 at 02:56 PM

i saw the slackers in rhode island last night, nice reminder how much those guys kick ass.
