After 30 years, Social Distortion's musical journey still exciting

According to Mike Ness, rock 'n' roll is supposed to be rebellious music. It's supposed to have an edge and angst and anger to it.

But the front man for Orange County punk legends Social Distortion doesn't think it's all about mommy's little monsters or sick boys.

"I think it's important to grab inspiration from positive things happening in your life, too. But yeah, that's what I gravitated towards, the discontent for the status quo and wanting to write about it," Ness said in a recent telephone interview.

Social Distortion performs at The Show at Agua Caliente Casino, Resort, Spa in Rancho Mirage on Saturday.

The band has been together for 30 years with hits such as "Mommy's Little Monster, "Story of My Life," "Ball and Chain," "I Was Wrong" and "Bad Luck," ever growing its loyal fan base.

"I think that they've always appreciated the honesty of the lyrics and the songwriting and the second thing is I think they respected that we're not afraid to evolve. I think if we were doing the same exact thing we were doing 30 years ago, I think that would be kind of weird," Ness said, laughing.

"We evolved, our fans evolved with us and it's real-life stuff," Ness added.

The band is headed back into the studio in January for its first studio album since 2004's "Sex, Love and Rock 'N' Roll." Ness said he's found that he can't write while on tour, but that the music comes when he's out living life. He said the band is excited about heading back into the studio.

"The main thing is to just keep going. We have such a momentum going right now, that's what keeps it fresh and exciting. Our level of success has been a very gradual thing. To be more popular now than you were 10 years ago, but still to have 30 years behind your belt is kind of a weird phenomenon," Ness said.

Love this band. What makes me like them even more is that I can listen to their songs with my daughter. She's 5 and likes to sing and dance to the music. Thanks to Social D for even more fun times with my kiddo.
