11-Year-Old Gives Birth on Wedding Day

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - An 11-year old Bulgarian girl gave birth to a baby girl after going into labor on her wedding day, according to The Daily Telegraph .

Kordeza Zhelyazkova became pregnant two weeks before her 11th birthday and was set to marry boyfriend Jeliazko Dimitrov, 19, when she went into labor during her three-day wedding last month.

"I'm not going to play with toys any more -- I have a new toy now," Zhelyazkova told Britain's News of the World newspaper .

The bride-to-be was still wearing her wedding dress and tiara when she arrived at a hospital to give birth to daughter Violeta.

She admitted that she had not known about sex education or even how to get pregnant. She presumed she was putting on weight from eating too many burgers until her grandmother suggested she was pregnant.

Zhelyazkova met Dimitrov in the playground of her school when he rescued her from bullies. Their daughter was conceived within a week. Dimitrov now faces up to six years in jail for having sex with a minor.

It is not uncommon for Bulgarian girls to become pregnant while in their teens. Most brides in the country are between 14 and 17 years of age.

Zhelyazkova is believed to be the youngest person in the world to give birth , although some say a 5-year-old girl in Peru gave birth to a baby boy in 1939.

Girls can go into puberty as early as 9. Only until recently(last 100 years or so) it was totally normal for marriages to start happening between the ages of 11-15.

Not necessarily. People have this tendancy to think that the average lifespan was so much lower in pre-modern times and nothing could be further from the truth. People have been living into their 60s and 70s for millenia.

Mind you, I'm not saying I'm okay with the age difference or even necessarily an 11 year old having kids... let alone sex at all. All I'm saying is it's not unheard of and in some parts of the world where the culture is still more similar to pre-modern society than in much of the rest of the world girls get married at young ages to significantly older people. It's mostly a changing reality of cultural attitudes that makes a taboo out of this sort of thing AND our increasing tendancy to delay adulthood into our mid-20s to 30s. Used to be that you were considered an adult as soon as you hit puberty with all the responsibilities that comes with.

had the kid right after turning 13.
babys dad was 17
her dad was a UD cop.
she is now a teacher at Drexel University, with same dude still.
it was the oddest thing going to see her in the hospital.

Exactly.

A lot of times movie portrayals are over exaggerated, but I don't think even Hollywood can outdo how fucking crazy life in the former Eastern Bloc countries is.
