Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

avatar in 3D

is fucking amazing. not sure if i missed a thread about it, but... well, if so, here's a new one.

the plot takes a while to get interesting, and the first hour or so is pretty generic goofy action film stuff with a shitty script. it picks up and gets pretty interesting. to be honest, i'm a bit surprised hollywood let the movie be made.

worth seeing in the theater, and drop the cash for the 3D version. seeing it in 2D is probably a big disappointment.

barc0debaby - 12-23-2009 at 09:53 PM

Saw it the other day....great movie. Just wish it wasn't so fucking long.

DaveMoral - 12-23-2009 at 11:48 PM

I'm interested, for sure. Probably be one of those I go to alone. My wife's not interested and I'm not taking my 3 year old.

lifeisabitch - 12-24-2009 at 01:54 AM

some of my sci-fi nerd friends liked it some hated it...
might take the boy to see it this weekend

XnMeX - 12-24-2009 at 09:00 AM

Am I the only person that is NOT interested in this movie?

BDx13 - 12-24-2009 at 10:45 AM

nope.

planning on going to see sherlock holmes tomorrow night, though.

XnMeX - 12-24-2009 at 10:50 AM

I am just not a fan of movies that are soo heavily computer effects driven. District 9 is as effects heavy as I like because it appears pretty seamless. This is just too obviously "fake" for me.

wez138 - 12-24-2009 at 10:50 AM

Sherlock holmes was filmed in my home town (manchester england) looks good!

As for avatar i'd rather eat my own face off than watch it.

JawnDiablo - 12-24-2009 at 10:57 AM

taking my son to see Avatar in 3D on the I-Max.
Can't wait.

barc0debaby - 12-24-2009 at 11:40 AM

Its the first 3D movie I've ever seen, so thats what won me over.

Sherlock Homes sounds like its gonna be a bomb....from what I've read about it they turned him into some kinda kung fu master. Iron Man minus the suit in old timey world.

No, seriously every time an ad comes on TV for this it makes me hate it more and more, i have no interest in ever seeing it, it just looks like some sort of futuristic, adultised Fern Gully or some shit!
I know Matty also shares the mutual hatred i do at the sheer thought of this movie.
I can see why it would appeal to people but for me, no.

XnMeX - 12-24-2009 at 12:29 PM

That is exactly what I was thinking!!!

Fern Gully meets Halo.

haha you have totally hit the nail on the head with that one!
The thing is, i like Fern Gully (im young, im allowed to!haha) and I actually really used to enjoy playing Halo too, the combo of them really does not appeal to me though!

Again, i'd rather eat my own face off than watch it

I was actually really against it, but ended up going just to hang out with some friends. I think James Cameron hasn't made a decent movie since the first and second Alien movies. Actually, I think those are the ONLY movies of his worth seeing...until now. Granted, the environmental ideology in Avatar is about as subtle as a bat to the head and the two main bad guys are written as ridiculous cartoon characters, but the movie over all is really impressive. The 3-D is used amazingly well, you feel immersed in the story and there really isn't any of the "whoa, shit is flying at my face" stuff going on. There IS a little bit of that cadillac liberal mentality that says the indigenous people need the big white man to save them from the rest of the evil white folk.

lifeisabitch - 12-24-2009 at 03:23 PM

got tickets for the imax 3d tonight...
that should be insane
my son and I have seen a lot of 3d movies this year, monsters vs aliens, ect, and imax transfromers
but this should be some next level stuff

for a 6 year old the story should be kind of simple
but this film is really more about the technology used to make it and the visuals...
sorry we live in a tech world now, and yeah a good story is getting harder and harder to find,
but this is the world we created and now have to deal with
give me some flashing lights and some eye candy every so often
and I liked fern guly as well
so fuck it

and being broke on xmas is no fun for anyone so doing something with him he wants to do is even better than buying some more useless crap

See, everyone seems to get hung up on that... but Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote Holmes as a master of a Japanese martial art. The man was always proficient in fisticuffs.

lifeisabitch - 12-25-2009 at 12:07 AM

just got back...
get over yourselves and have some fun...
not the most original story ever, but there are original aspects...
and it's visually stunning
needs to be experienced on the big screen in imax if you can...
no home theather is going to match feeling the battles right in your face.

Jason the Magnificent - 12-25-2009 at 09:04 AM

I'm not falling over myself to see this but definitely will once things wind down around the holidays.

I never understood people getting wound up over 3D/CGI etc in a movie...it's a movie (PS. the stuff happening when there is no CGI is fake also)...you guys do know you're allowed to have fun for a couple minutes in your life right? You've never watched Clash of the Titans or Star Wars with that shitty stop animation stuff? Or did we all have a political boycott on that too?

BDx13 - 12-26-2009 at 05:49 PM

fuck the haters, holmes was awesome.

Was thinking of going to see this at the cinema tmrw as its been so long since i last went and i need an excuse to get out the house at some point this weekend!
Seen trailers and so on and figured it looks like it might be good.

lifeisabitch - 12-26-2009 at 07:06 PM

no one is hating on holmes...
but 6 year olds are into giant blue space titties

tireironsaint - 12-26-2009 at 08:05 PM

Going to see Holmes later tonight, this one I've been looking forward to since I first saw a preview for it several months ago.

lifeisabitch - 12-26-2009 at 11:32 PM

my son liked avatar...
he didn't really notice the girl aliens wear very little if any clothing

but I think he'd be really bored at Holmes

BDx13 - 12-26-2009 at 11:58 PM

holmes is definitely a different vibe than the most of the bbc and pbs versions we're familiar with. it's an action movie, no doubt. fun to watch though.

tireironsaint - 12-27-2009 at 12:30 AM

Just got home from Holmes, and I loved it. Yeah, I suppose it's an action movie, but it's all about the mental aspect and that's what did it for me. It was a great counterbalance to Avatar, because the plot and writing in Sherlock Holmes more than made up for the lack of those two things in Avatar. I liked both movies, but Holmes is much more likely to end up in my DVD collection than Avatar.

DaveMoral - 12-28-2009 at 12:17 AM

I'm itching to see Avatar, Holmes, The Road and what not... but first things first, Alvin and The Chipmunks The Squeakuel. Yes, Chipmunks. My 3 year old is into it and I like taking him to the movies.

I've been watching the classic TMNT with him all day today. He fucking loves it. He's running around singing the song and playing with swords.
