Band Members With Side Projects- thoughts?

CR83 - 6-3-2005 at 12:32 PM

What do you all think? I am not in a band nor have I ever been. I can see how these things could cause some problems with bands. What if the side project blows up and becomes big? So many things to consider. I don't have an answer either way.

edit: blah blah blah, i should not talk

hmmmm.... interesting.

I know it can go in a million different directions. Would other band members feel like they are getting cheated? I can see being in a band like being with a girlfirend or boyfriend then a new band being like an affair. Maybe people are grwon up enough to realize what the deal is. It jsut seems like as soon as a side project goes up, the original band goes away.

well, Jason Newstead left metallica because he was in a side project. He was pretty much told "choose metallica or your side project" so he walked.

I guess Im for side projects though because Bane was a side project of Converge

I've got no problem with side bands as long as they don't sound exactly like the main band, and it doesn't lead to the main band breaking up. Rob Lind is a perfect example. Can you imagine not having Sinners & Saints and Ramallah?

Great point

all kinds of great bands have resulted from side projects, and that's cool. but i do have a lot of respect for musicians, like rob, who manage to keep multiple bands going. that's dedication to the craft.

I guess i'm the perfect example. I play in The New Breed but have recently started another project that I am taking quite seriously (www.jonnystevens.ca) .

All I can say is that The New Breed have been a band for 8 years. We've recorded a lot, toured a lot and all that stuff. I personally have room for both and will consider each seperatly when deciding my time. The New Breed may not be able to fill some of the things I would like to achieve and visa vera.

I feel that as long as you stay friends and are able to voice you're concerns you will be alright. It becomes an issue when people don't talk about it at all and put unrealistic demands on eachother...at the end of the day its all about having fun and making good music.
