Can somebody recommend a good program for ripping a dvd to your computer? I have a dvd I need to copy for a friend but have no idea on how to do it.

I use a combo of 2 programs... DVD Decrypter (to rip it to the computer) and DVD Shrink to burn it.

Both programs are freeware and work great.

Handbrake is a great user friendly program that will encode the video from VOB/ISO/IFO down to .avi or .mkv files with Xvid or x264/H.264 encoding.
Takes a 4GB movie to say 700MB .avi file.
Quality is not elite or anything but it's good enough and piss easy to use.

I was using handbrake, it also makes it easier to make a direct copy of any DVD.

Another good one is Avi2DVD. Just got it, recommended by the folks at BleepingComputer.com.
