Fun things I've noticed with a kid in school:

Some of the teacher's can't spell. "thankyou" is a common one, and I swear I'm not making this up - On a school sign back in Adelaide it said "saftey" instead of "safety".

Apparently "johnny and me" or "me and johnny" are grammatically correct now, "johhny and i" is no longer accepted.

Students are going to grade 5, 6 and beyond without the ability to read. Nobody fails any more, everyone passes. There's no summer school, there's no grading. Schools give comments now, nobody gets A's and B's or percentage scores in primary school at all.

School's are a breeding ground for laziness and complacency these days. Nobody is learning anything, it's day care made to mold our kids into fucking sheep.

I have a much younger cousin that is exactly what 666mike described. I was a sub for a fifth grade class 2 years ago as a requirement for a class of mine. His teacher and i were talking and she stated he had only 27% in her social studies class. She also stated he was going to pass since he is never absent and never causes any issues. Unreal.

schools have no money and are restlessly hammered on by bored, out of touch, often religiously motivated parents with lawyers that refuse to admit they are doing a bullshit job fostering their kids education at home via television, video games, and prescription drugs, and that their kids may have irrepressible shit wrong with them as a result

case in point with columbine, and with almost every scenario brought up in that highly entertaining (im not being sarcastic here) piece the OP posted. the bottom line is that parents now dont ever want their kids to ever feel ANYTHING good or bad. good makes them free thinkers and difficult, and bad makes them overly self conscious and traditional "losers" that wont be popular. it makes parents jobs easier and it makes for a better sale about how great little johnny is doing to their equally delusional friends and neighbors.

this is a major reason why charter schools have such great appeal for so many and why its such an easy political sell when legislation is introduced to allow tax payer money into them.....even though things like that are blatantly illegal via the first amendment of the constitution, and horribly immoral when it comes to the general well being of the community in the long run

bottom line is that public schools have an awful lot working against them in this country right now, and its really really sad

right now the average classroom in arizona (7th grade) now has 36 kids per teacher, and an average of $500 dollars a year available to them in funding for materials for the entire class

you cant put new tires on a Hyundai for that much let alone create a legitimate learning environment for 36 future members of your community

the main difference between 1959 and 2009 is that in 1959 parents stayed the fuck out of the classroom where they weren't trained to be, and dont know how to run, and they didnt attempt to manhandle a kids education like they do now. they trusted the teachers to do their jobs and mr smith went about his day selling Frigidaires and mrs smith made pies and watched her stories (or vice versa....whatever your pleasure)

as the old saying goes.......

too many cooks in the kitchen ruins the soup
