Slipknot bassist Paul Gray dead at 38

Paul Gray, bass guitarist with macabre heavy metal band Slipknot, has been found dead in an Iowa hotel room aged 38, US media reported Monday.

The musician's body was discovered by staff at a hotel in Johnston, near Des Moines by an employee, reports said citing local police. The cause of death has not been determined but foul play was not suspected.

Gray was one of the founders of the group, which was launched in Iowa in 1995 and has become famous for the menacing hockey masks band members wear. Gray famously wore a black pig mask on stage.

The band has enjoyed sustained success since their debut 1999 album, "Slipknot," which sold more than a million copies.

The band's fourth album - "All Hope Is Gone" - reached number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States and also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Austria, Finland, Sweden and Switzerland.

The band has been nominated for Grammys on seven occasions, winning in 2006 in the best metal performance category for "Before I Forget."

I know its not a very popular opinion, but I do like Slipknot and they put on a great live show. You can fault a band for some of their fans being shitheads.

i have never heard a single song by this band. saw those masks at some point in like 2000 and that shit was over, there was no way i was gonna listen to that. just too much for me.

I totally understand your opinions BD & Gavin and you are in the majority, but I'm a sucker for a mask! I loved Quiet Riot first for the mask & second for the music. I love Gwar for the masks/costumes. I love Jason & Leatherface (masks!). Hell I even love the movie Mask! :)

when they came out with the first album I was like oh that band on Revelation from the late 80s?
I was quickly corrected.
the stuff they did with the triple drummers was kinda cool.
I never got into them too much though.
sucks when a dude dies young though regardless.

Never even tried to listen to them. I read somewhere that MUSHROOMHEAD had a supossed record deal with a major label and then they backed out thinking they were worth more. So the label found another farm bread band from IOWA and signed them so long as they agree to copy the MUSHROOMHEAD shtick. It was a success or so the story goes.

Never cared for either bands or there gimmicks. Supposedly the drummer from slipnot is really good though.

Same here... Saw the album cover artwork for Slipknots first cd and had to check it out. The gimmick works for some.

Agree with this. I saw them in Toronto after the Slipknot album came out & the show was awesome. The opening bands of course sucked (Kittie & Dope) but Slipknot put on a killer show.

To this day I've never heard anything else aside from their demo & that self titled album.

CR83 - 5-25-2010 at 10:19 PM

Never heard them or at least focused on them while hearing them in passing. Sorry to hear about a young dude going down but I'd suspect drug use and this causes me to have less sympathy.

I'm not going to diss a band when they are down or when I've never heard them
