Ohio Jesus statue struck by lightning, destroyed

BDx13 - 6-15-2010 at 06:36 AM

MONROE, Ohio — Police say a six-story-tall statue of Jesus Christ with his arms raised along a southwest Ohio highway has been struck by lightning in a thunderstorm and has burned to the ground.

The "King of Kings" statue had stood since 2004 at the evangelical Solid Rock Church along Interstate 75 in Monroe, just north of Cincinnati.

Monroe police dispatchers say the lightning strike set the statue ablaze late Monday night.

The sculpture showed Jesus from the torso up and was nicknamed Touchdown Jesus because of the way his arms were raised. It was made of plastic foam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remains.

Police Chief Mark Neu (noo) says the fire spread to an amphitheater next to the statue but was confined to the attic area. He says no one was injured.

I love massive religious imagery. I had never even heard of this before, but really wish I could have seen it in person.

While driving cross country years ago, we stopped at the largest cross in the western hemisphere. Didn't know about it either, but there it as we drove along - all 190 feet of it, looming on the horizon, all lit up at 11 at night! http://www.crossministries.net

I think the giant statue in Brazil is kind of cool looking however......

That second pic is crazy.

Some of the comments I heard from the church members on NPR this afternoon were outrageous. One dude said "Jesus is like Arnold Schwartzenegger, the Terminator, he said 'I'll be back.'" I shit you not.

The Brazil Jesus is awesome.

Agreed.
I'm not religious at all but enormous statues and sculptures generally look cool.
I saw this statue in Lisbon, Portugal recently and it's awesome.
You can see it from pretty much anywhere in the city.

not directly across, maybe half mile down the road.
