Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

new plan...

XHonusWagnerX - 7-6-2010 at 10:11 AM

about a month and a half ago I read John Josephs new book 'Meat is for Pussies' as soon as I finished the book I stopped eating meat. Its been a little over 5 weeks I think.

Last week I decided to try and cut out soda. Its the HARDEST thing I've ever done. I was drinking 99% diet soda, but I was up to probably an average of 15 cans a day. I dont understand how diet soda can effect your weight when it has ZERO calories, but people say that it does.

Also last week we started a 'biggest loser' contest at work. teams of 4 people and each team pays in $100. 70% of the winnings will go to the Jimmy Fund and the other 30% split between the winning team members. We had our first weigh in and I lost 12 pounds so far.

I've got a LONG way to go. I would like to lose another 95 pounds, but we'll see how I do. At this point anything is better than how I was.

I will say that August 13th is the last day of the contest at work (my teams weighing in a day early on the 12th) and also the day of the Sheer Terror show in Philly so I may be breaking 'Vedge' that day and enjoying some Cheese Steaks and Cokes with my friend thats coming to the show!

congratulations on going five weeks meat-free.
not sure i could do it!
moving on to the soda....

15 cans?
dude, that's 180 ounces, which is like... 1.5 gallons a day.
you need to break the fuck up with soda asap.
it may be 0 calories, but that shit is 100% nutrition-free.

start your day with a big glass of 100% juice like v8 V-Fusion, welch's grape or tropicana pure. then start throwin' down ice water! you're supposed to drink 64oz of water a day - that's only a third of the soda you're currently drinking!

disclosure!
i don't mean to come down hard on you for this; you know i am unfit as a motherfucker... but i dumped the regular consumption of soda years ago and couldn't be happier about it. these days, i drink maybe one can a week. i drink water out of a pint glass. got on my desk every day. four pint glasses meets that 64 oz requirement.

I gave up soda in late 2006, just before I had gastric bypass surgery. One thing they recomend for patients is that you avoid carbonated beverages (although some folks say you can start drinking them again after a while). Haven't had any soda since then. My lady consumes Tab and Diet Coke by the gallon, though.

Dave - 7-6-2010 at 03:23 PM

I couldn't give up meat, not a chance in Fucking hell. Soda, not a big deal, i might have one can a week.

But congrats on losing the poundage. I have like 30lb, i would love to rid myself of...But sitting at a desk all day, not doing any exercise.....and drinking beer doesn't help...
But i do drink lots of water, i do about 1 ---> 1.5L a day. Not sure what the oz is of that, i'm all metric for Volumes....(but strangely imperial for measurements, and weight?)

XHonusWagnerX - 7-6-2010 at 08:13 PM

I'm still fat as hell, but I'm doing my best. It was 100 degrees today and I played basketball for 20 minutes. I'm trying to do a MINIMUM of 20 minutes a day of constant exercise and as much as I can through out the day. Also eating as close as I can get to 1200 calories a day.

I'm 8 days soda free and missing it like crazy!!!

XHonusWagnerX - 7-13-2010 at 10:11 AM

well I'm still fat, but I'm down 18 pounds since I started my most recent diet/plan.

I'm hoping that this isnt so much a 'diet' but that I'm developing some new habbits that I can keep up even if I do get 'skinny'.

BDx13 - 7-13-2010 at 10:13 AM

18 pounds?
that's nuts.
really shows what a difference your food choices can make!

Johnny_Whistle - 7-13-2010 at 11:50 AM

Yep, that's the way to do it. No diets, just lifestyle choices. Congrats on the weight loss.

Colin - 7-13-2010 at 12:24 PM

congatulations, cutting back on food/drink that contains corn syrup's been my new thing lately. I'm not a big soda fan, I really only drink it if I have a mixed drink, but that small amount has an incredible amount of sugar in it. I've been vegetarian twice & just couldn't do it, so I've been really trying to eat grassfed meat, because even the stuff that just says "organic" or "free-range" is still corn-fed.

CR83 - 7-18-2010 at 03:36 PM

Honus, that is awesome news my friend. Congrats. What diet soda does is it causes you to swell up.

Take a ziplock bag and pour a soda in it. Close the zip lock and watch what happens. It fills with gass. When you drink soda, you get filled with gas. Yeah, you burp some out but you ingest the carbonation and soda is just straight up Chemicals. They cause you to retain liquids.

Water helps flush your system AND it is need to metabolic functions.

You are doing a fantastic job just by being active and making positive changes. I hope you are proud of yourself. I know I'm proud of you.

I saw BD's juice suggestions. One recommendation is Naked Juice. That shit is amazing. Highly caloric but it is fucking great.

XHonusWagnerX - 7-21-2010 at 10:12 AM

thanks guys!

Once I get down to a more healthy weight I will start drinking juice and stuff like that. Right now I'm super concerned and concentrating on calories and keeping them low and I dont wanna drink calories that I can eat insted.

Its been 3 weeks since the "diet contest" started at work and I'm down 21 pounds. Still a LOT more to go, but not bad so far.

CR83 - 7-21-2010 at 10:28 PM

Dude, 21 pounds?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You fucking rule. Great job!

XHonusWagnerX - 7-26-2010 at 10:46 AM

had my first week with no weight loss and I'm pretty bummed. I actually worked a lot harder last week and got on the scale today and not even a pound. Trying not to let it get me down, but its tough when you work (what feels) really hard and have no results at all. Bummer

BDx13 - 7-26-2010 at 11:35 AM

work harder this week and show that scale who's boss next week!

XHonusWagnerX - 7-29-2010 at 07:06 AM

26 and counting

XHonusWagnerX - 8-3-2010 at 10:42 AM

30 pounds down with 9 days to go in the work contest and 10 days till Sheer Terror/Cheese Steaks & Cokes!

I really wanna get 7 more to be SUPER psyched with myself for the contest, but 10 more would be amazing!

BDx13 - 8-3-2010 at 01:25 PM

30 pounds is awesome.
congratulations!

XHonusWagnerX - 8-3-2010 at 06:06 PM

I hope you notice a difference!

XHonusWagnerX - 8-10-2010 at 09:42 AM

32 pounds down and my final weigh in for the contest at work is this Thursday at about 9:00am. Not sure how many more points I can squeeze off, but we will see!

XHonusWagnerX - 8-11-2010 at 07:28 AM

34!

BDx13 - 8-11-2010 at 09:45 AM

that's great.
i'd love to drop 35 lbs.

XHonusWagnerX - 8-12-2010 at 09:12 AM

I've been in a biggest loser style contest at work for weight lost and in the last 45 days I've lost 38 pounds. I havent eaten meat in almost 3 months (until tomorrow!) and I hadnt had a soda in over 6 weeks (until a few minutes ago).

My plan is to take the weekend off and then start again on Monday because I still have more weight to lose, but I'm pretty happy with myself and I'm motivated enough to keep going!

We wont know until tomorrow, but my team is 99% sure we won the contest and the prize is $97.50 per person (4 person team). Our total weight loss should be just under 100 pounds for about 8.5%, but my personal loss of 38 pounds is a little over 12%

and heres a picture from a year ago as a little comparison...

^ Those are two of the most important points. What a great feeling that must be.

Add to that, the fact that you're doing your body and your health a huge favor by shedding that weight. This kind of weight loss coupled with exercise literally puts years back on your life. You're inspiring ME, Honus!

you honestly didnt look that heavy to me when I met you at The Business show, but I'm glad to inspire! I think I can keep it going at a healthy pace after taking the weekend off!

BDx13 - 8-13-2010 at 12:22 AM

Being 6'4" helps. The 285 pounds get stretched out over a lot of frame!
