Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

My mom is donating her kidney tomorrow

Brit - 1-24-2011 at 12:13 PM

She goes in for surgery at 5:45 am tomorrow, in Boston. She's donating it to her best friend. I don't know how she's mentally prepared herself for this, because it's a difficult and brave thing to begin with, but my dad refuses to discuss it in the house, like it's not happening. I'm optimistic but at the same time totally anxious. I was just wondering if anyone here has any experience with this. If not, just do me a favor and keep my family in your thoughts/prayers/etc. Thanks guys...

Holy crap, best of luck to her, she's doing something incredibly generous and brave. My dad had to have a kidney removed a little over a year ago, but I don't know anyone who's actually donated.

WoW! Wish your mom luck and give her a big Hug from all us Thorpers.

And keep us updated

Hope all goes perfectly.

Awesome of her to do this.
My son's grandpa, his mom's dad has been waiting on a kidney for a long time. His brother was to donate his, but then got stones, so it's now a no go.
He had a transplant 14 years ago and now needs a new one again.
I don't know how he's hung on this long.
It all gets me down big time. I never liked the guy when I was dating his daughter, but in the last 10 years he's been a great grandfather to my son....but that's all my BS.

again, such an act of selflessness should be commended.
your mom is obviously a hell of a person

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it :)

Just an update: the surgery went well, my mom is still in the hospital, and we don't know when she'll be able to come home - they were saying tomorrow or Friday. I have yet to see her because I worked all day yesterday, today, and now this snowstorm. My dad saw her yesterday and this morning. Today she's been super nauseous and is in a lot of pain. My dad likened it to being hit by a truck. But I guess they finally gave her some pain killers that won't make her puke. He'll tell me more when he gets home.

Give her our best wishes on a speedy recovery.

Hope all is still going well.... Is she home yet?How is she feeling now?

I have 2 kidney disease that don't really affect me now but will cause me to have dialysis and eventually a new kidney way in the future..... I highly commend anyone willing to go through all of that to help someone out.

Sorry for the late reply... mom's good! She's at home, doing well. First few days home were a bit rough. She has to stay put for 2 weeks, then after 6 weeks they say she'll be back to normal. Her friend is doing well also.

Thanks everyone for your support :)

Furly I never knew that...

Glad things are going well. Your mom is clearly a great person and though I don't know you personally it seems that the apple has not fallen far from the tree. I wish you and the family all the best and a speedy recovery.

BKT.

I hope things are still going well for the both of them.
If there really is a heaven...I'm sure your mom will be getting a first class ticket for this one. What an amazing thing to do for someone.

Furly, sorry to hear about this.I hope you find an angel like Brit's mom when the time comes for you.
