How I can stop smoking?

Stop Smoking - Start Living
Stopping smoking is not easy. Below are some tips which may help you to stop smoking.

1. Write a list of the reasons why you want to stop, and keep them with you. Refer to them when tempted to light up. You may wish to read a separate leaflet in this series called 'Smoking - The Facts'. This gives the reasons why smoking is so harmful and lists the benefits of stopping.

2. Be aware of situations in which you are most likely to want to smoke. In particular, drinking alcohol is often associated with failing in an attempt to stop smoking. You should consider not drinking much alcohol in the first few weeks after stopping smoking. Try changing your routine for the first few weeks. For example, dont go to the pub
for a while if that is a tempting place to smoke and drink alcohol. Also, if drinking tea and coffee are difficult times, try drinking mainly fruit juice and plenty of water instead.

3. Take one day at a time. Mark off each successful day on a calendar. Look at it when you feel tempted to smoke, and tell yourself that you don't want to start all over again.

4. Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) can help if withdrawal symptoms are troublesome. Nicotine gum, sprays, patches, tablets, lozenges, and inhalers are available. Using one of these roughly doubles your chance of stopping smoking if you really want to stop. A pharmacist, GP, practice nurse or Stop Smoking Clinic can advise about NRT. There is also a separate leaflet called 'Nicotine Replacement Therapy' which gives more details.

I wish they weren't addictive...I'd like having an occasional one if I could, wish they sold single cigarettes around here. I think I might stop again today....I've quit several times for anywhere between a year to weeks....I need to save all my money for a vacation/rent/bills all coming up next week....I had pretty bad asthma as a kid, it went away for the most part when I was a teenager, but cigarettes seem to have a way harsher effect on me compared to a lot of people my age. I sound like someone whose been smoking for 40 years sometimes & I've only been smoking on/off for 10 years. Yesterday I kept lighting them, taking a few drags & just feeling like shit & putting them out. That's always signaled time for a break/quitting attempt for me.

so are hand rolled ones any less unhealthy than the ones in packs?

I'm sure the lack of a filter doesn't help.

Smokes are expensive here, but I used to drive to the Indian reserve and bought cartons for $20. For me it wasn't a money issue, it was a health one. I have enough health problems and need to exercise to lose a shitload of weight. Smoking was impeding what little progress I'm making. If I was in decent shape I'd probably still be smoking.
