Exercise / fitness peeps...

any of you down with runkeeper.com?

definitely one of the coolest app/websites i've seen in a long time. app available for iphone/android/windows 7.

if you run, bike, swim, skate, row, hike, whatever, set up an account and let me know. i need some people on my street team to keep me motivated!

Jason the Magnificent - 6-14-2011 at 04:24 PM

I use a website that I'm guessing is similar to that to track bike rides called mapmyride.com. Though that probably doesn't help you much lol.

Mickey - 6-14-2011 at 05:30 PM

I'm using mytracks to keep track of what I do when mphountain biking. The mileage is pretty accurate with the computer on my bike, but also keeps track of total time compared to moving time, elevation gains and speed averages. Plus it has latitude and longitude if I ever get lost or crash and can't make it out.

sentrand - 6-14-2011 at 05:33 PM

wish i had the otivation.

BDx13 - 6-14-2011 at 07:18 PM

yeah, those all sound pretty similar.
i haven't seen mapmyride.com, but I have seen mapmyrun.com
(not that i'm running anywhere)

runkeeper is cool because it lets you track any activity (run, bike, swim), create your own and search other people's routes w/ custom maps, and create a 'street team' of friends to compare activities along with the all distances, averages, elevations, etc, biometrics, etc. it even incorporates photos you take into the custom maps it creates for your routes. really impressive.

and sentrand, i'm already finding that the app/website alone is motivation. when i log in and see the custom maps it recorded while i was riding, the miles i;ve covered, the calories i've burned...makes me want to get back out there!

^^^^ A friend of mine just got back from getting a certification with this dude. We follow his workouts at my friends gym. He posts these on youtube as well and you can change them up if your getting board with your present workouts. It's really a good time if you get some friends together and kick ass.

CR83 - 6-15-2011 at 11:14 PM

This looks cool. My issue is that I use a GPS wrist watch thing when I run and not my phone but I'll join up and get shit going. Thanks BD!

BDx13 - 6-16-2011 at 12:08 AM

the nice thing about using the phone is that it syncs from the device to the website wirelessly. but depending on what kind of watch you have, the data can still be synced manually:

My Garmin is dated. It's a serial input and I don't have the connected anymore. I can manually enter into phone/web. We'll hook it up and we are just one step closer to that energy drink we e-mailed about.
:bouncy:

My daughter asked that I use that smiley

JawnDiablo - 6-16-2011 at 10:26 PM

when I return from California I have to crash diet, work out and stop drinking for a while to keep from dying young.
for real.
no joke.
Part of me fears some side effects.

mattybar - 6-17-2011 at 04:45 AM

if you want a good and functional health kick take up Krav Maga.

LordActionWood - 6-17-2011 at 03:15 PM

Yo, BD

What kind of arm band do you use to carry your iphone when running?

I want to start bringing mine along so I can use this app but I have hated every arm band I have owned.

Thanks,

Darren

good advice.....a few years ago, I felt like my fitness was at an all time low. I was the kind of person who always enjoyed being active but started riding the couch and freestyle eating and drinking.

I started training in martial arts almost two years ago.....Lost pounds and feel great.

It keeps my interest way more than just running or working out in a gym. I get the shit knocked out of me sometimes but that is part of the fun.

BDx13 - 6-17-2011 at 03:48 PM

well, i'm not running anywhere, so i just stick the phone in my pocket when i walk or bike. i'd probably be inclined to get a beltclip and just tie my drawers tight.

i made my activities and maps public you youz can see some of what ends up on the runkeeper site: http://runkeeper.com/user/DMx13/

darren, after you create an account, add me to your street team. i got cr83 on there already!

alright but don't laugh at me when you see tennis showing up in my activity list....that's right, tennis ....every monday with dudes from work.

BDx13 - 6-17-2011 at 04:06 PM

no shame in that game.
where do you play?
i might send sadie over to join you.
she's been on about tennis for weeks and i have no idea why.

when we lived in sf, j and i got rackets at the goodwill and played a few times.
we were horrible, but it was fun and hilarious to watch, i'm sure.

We play at Valley Stream Park in Malvern/Great Valley.

I am horrible...but it is pretty fun.

I probably curse too much to play with kids but we could meet up some weekend and play.....Sadie would love it.

Isn't that the Russian Special Forces fighting style? It's based on a certain amount of blows in a certain amount of time I think?

Tennis is fun. I grew up playing. Me and Mrs. R83 played when we first dated. It's getting you moving. That's all that matters. Keep it going!

Question how much data does something like this use up on the phone? I'm shopping for a new phone/plan and outside of occasional emails something like this would be my biggest data usage culprit.

CR83 - 9-17-2011 at 07:43 PM

Not much data. It is very simplistic really. This would not be a huge data grab in my opinion.

Jason the Magnificent - 9-17-2011 at 08:02 PM

That's good I'm looking at getting the 200mb cheap ass 59.99 plan from t mobile. I never use my home phone...so I'm thinking of saving the $40 on that and $15 for my pay as you go cell...and just combining them for $5 a month.

Looking to upgrade to primarily to something android to sync calendars easily with my xoom and have a little data for stuff like mapmyride type stuff. I hardly ever use phone minutes...so I don't want some plan that's just wasted money.

CR83 - 9-18-2011 at 04:39 PM

Very cool. I love the synchronized Google Calendar. Wish is matched up with my workout Outlook.

BDx13 - 9-18-2011 at 09:26 PM

the data that the app collects and sends to the runkeeper site is just a small text file. beyond that, the map images are small and really, if you don;t access that part of the app, it won;t download them.

Jason the Magnificent - 9-19-2011 at 05:44 AM

I ended up getting a 4G phone w/ 2g of monthly data so I should be plenty good.
