What to do with a weekend in Amsterdam?

random - 8-24-2012 at 04:02 PM

Any suggestions? I know panzer and Shawn have spent some time there. Quick answers are most helpful. :) Not so interested in the red light district, though it seems coffee shops are still open to foreigners for now.

Right now, plan is Anne Frank House and walking along some canals.

Get baked.

Wasn't that implied? :P

BDx13 - 8-24-2012 at 06:29 PM

wait...there's a plan to close the coffee shops to foreigners?

random - 8-24-2012 at 06:39 PM

BD, already happening. Main issue is smuggling at border towns into countries (eg. Germany) who are less tolerant. Amsterdam is not a border town and is fighting it hard because they fear the loss of tourism. To my knowledge, foreigners are banned from buying at border towns already and will be banned everywhere at start of next year unless things change.

dutch people are some bike-riding motherfuckers. seriously. i've heard this before, but it's crazy to see in a very awesome way. they don't just have bike paths, they have separate bike roads between the sidewalk and the road for motor vehicles. and TONS of them ride bikes.

oh my god, what did i write above? shouldnīt post drunk.
seriously, visit the heineken experience, the Rijksmuseum (lots of paintings from 16th to 19th century)
shawn was at the Van Gogh Museum and was excited.
harbour and town canal cruises are fun.
the fleemarket at the Waterlooplein is nice.
when i had been there for the first time we just walked through the streets, sat in some bars at the canals and watched people. was a lot of fun, many crazy folks live in that city.

tilburg is nice as well, but hasnīt much to offer.

Go with what Panzer said about museums. They have the biggest collection of Dutch art in the world, if I remember correctly. Plus a whole museum for Rembrandt.

Also, go to the red light district, hire a sex worker and for the duration of the time just have a chat about stuff. Possibly convince the sex worker to go bowling.

Drink awesome, stupidly powerful beer?

ShawnRefuse - 8-27-2012 at 09:32 AM

Van Gogh museum and Rilk are awesome. Heineken was a fun stop but wish there was more free beer there. I did get a Refuse Resist bottle :)

ShawnRefuse - 8-27-2012 at 09:33 AM

Also going when sick of it all is playing is a good time. Right roland?

panzerkreuzer - 8-27-2012 at 03:41 PM

that's not even my scene i think it's utter hogwash.

Some friends of mine were denied entry to a coffeeshop in Maastricht and then had to wait for a friend with a Belgian passport as he was apparently allowed entry.
Why Belgians are allowed and not UK citizens is a mystery to me. You'd think they'd just be a bit more stringent at customs with people who've been to Holland.
If the bill does come into play, it's certainly going to put a dampener on Roadburn festival, what with it being like the biggest stoner rock festival in Europe.

random - 8-29-2012 at 03:21 PM

thanks, all. pretty uneventful weekend in the end. lots of rain put a damper on things. did hit up heineken experience (which is not actually the heineken brewery like i thought it was), anne frank house, and wandered around a lot. walked around red light during the day a bit... prostitutes and coffee shops are up and running in the morning, a bit to my surprise. spacecake that i thought would make me fall asleep ended up making me feel like i pounded down 6-8 pints before i fell asleep.

spent the second evening drinking guinness at the irish pub around the corner and talking to the staff who mostly seemed to be from ireland.

city is very much a tourist trap, which i don't like. people on bikes are assholes. could see myself going back, but only with a plan, with friends, or with the intent of taking advantage of the smart shops.
