Following my getting to know you theme (Entrepreneurs thread)...Who here has a band? What type of music? What is your roll in the band? If you're not in a band, do you play an instrument, and if so what?

I was in a band up until a couple of weeks ago. I've been playing guitar for about 12 years now I guess. Still play and practise quite a bit. Can't afford to buy guitars much, but the seven I have do me fine I suppose. I'd love to pick up an ESP one day though.

with the exception of the time i spent playing cowbell in Edgewise, i have never been in a band and can not play an instrument. (although i did take baratone lessons in elementary school.)

I play guitar. Barely. Im amazed that i can keep the thing in tune.
I have a band. www.grown.homestead.com or www.myspace.com/fivefamilies.
Its amazing that were actually a band, considering how much we drink, and bitch, and never practice.
As for equioment.
I own a bad ass lespaul copy, that i bought from a truck driver dude for 20 bucks.

I used to own a Blue Voodoo head and cab. But it sucked, so i pawned i, and have yet to buy anything, due to me having bills and a family.
So any donations will be accepted.

I play about everything except drums. When I do demos, I just use Fruity Loops or Leaf Drums, I don't like fucking with mic'ing drum kits, etc.

No band currently, but I spent a very brief time in a band called Kinghorse back in the 90's and played in both early incarnations of The Hookers as well as a later incarnation in the late 90's/early 00. Adam has a band now called Brothers of Conquest and they're really fucking good, I highly recommend them.

I play guitar in a hardcore band.

Outside of my hardcore band, I also play bass, banjo, mandolin, accordion, and melodion.

I've got too much gear to mention it all but my curent main rig is a Schecter Scorpion w/ EMGs, ENGL Powerball, and a Bogner Uberschall cabinet.

I got the mandolin a long time ago when I became interested in doing some Pogues-influenced stuff. I wound up hooking up with an extremely talented singer-songwriter whose main influences were the Pogues, Tom Waits, and Elvis Costello. I recorded some of his songs with him singing and playing guitar and a banjo-ukulele, and I added mandolin and melodeon accompaniment parts.

I got the banjo when I became interested in doing some hardcore/oi songs based around mixing fast fingerpicking techniques on the banjo with fast power chords on the guitars. I think the banjo played in that style is a really cool aggressive sound that would go well with fast-paced rock-influenced oi. I got the hang of playing the banjo in that style pretty well. But since my band is leaning more and more towards straight hardcore as time goes on, I probably won't get a chance to try those ideas out.

newbreedbrian - 8-29-2005 at 06:42 AM

i meant what make/model. sounds like you've got some good ideas there man. i play mandolin myself and i will definately pick up banjo at some point (gotta learn that scruggs clawhammer style!)

For the mandolin, I've got an Ovation, which basically looks like a miniature version of one of their round-back acoustic guitars. I picked it for the price and because it's easy to record. It's got a built-in pickup and active-EQ.

For the banjo, I've got a Deering Goodtime 2. It was cheap and it sounds awesome. Plus it's really light-weight unlike most banjos.

newbreedbrian - 8-29-2005 at 12:04 PM

right on, i've seen an ovation but haven't had a chance to play one. i've got a Taggart A and an Epiphone F. I got to play a Gilchrist a few months ago, now that was a nice mandolin (just a hair out of my price range though at around 24k :D ) I've heard good things about Deering

I was in an offensive spoken word shock rock band called Salty Bee for one show in order to piss off people at a club. We later recorded a cd on a kid's computer. I sang at the show and did percussion and singing on the cd.

I play guitar and have been known to bust out the occassional percissional instrument when Sentai or La Mi Vida passes them out. I also entertained for Sentai and Hand Fed Babies loading their gear into the Gloucester Art Space with a toy keyboard.
