APATHY IN PUNK AND HARCORE?

We put another saturday matinee show on last weekend.
we had two bands,

one called silent minority who were a fucking awesome metal/hc/rap style of band.

the other, called balbulus, two guys playing more industrial kind of stuff who were shit hot.

since we started doing the shows back in june we have had a wide variety of different styles of "underground"- (for want of a better word) bands playing.
all the shows have been FREE admission.

on saturday just gone, about 10 fucking people turned up.

is it apathy or just fucking laziness?

it really fucking pisses me off, and makes you feel like saying fuck it, after we put work into booking and advertising only to have next to no cunt show up.

we dont even make a fucking penny out of it ourselves, just a couple of free beers on the day of the show, (which was always our intention anyway) we just do the shows for the love of the music and the scene in general.

I'm beginning to wonder if there is a fucking scene at all, and the love is certainly on the wane.

I don't get to as many shows as I used to because of my back injury but I still try to see a few now and then. I have no problem paying to get in just so I can support the bands. If people don't show up then fuck them. They're only gonna show up for the "known" bands so they can make sure that everybody sees them, and so everybody knows that they're "hardcore." It's good to see people like you are still putting out the effort to showcase the music without looking to line your pockets.

These metalcore/mallpunk kids don't care about the scene because they don't know it exists. MTV doesn't talk about the scene when they play the newest Good Charlotte or Atreyu video. These kids don't know what real hardcore is about or what it means to a lot of us. Those are the people who are in it for the fashion and the trend. They won't be here in 5 years. They're not show up to see a show with bands none of them have seen on MTV, or if they don't have shit for sale at Hot Topic. Most of them get a confused look on they're faces if you mention a 7 inch. They think it's a dildo or something. They don't know about AF, Blood For Blood, Discharge, or thousands of other great bands.

The real question isn't about whether they care about the scene. The question is, not to sound elitist, do we even want them there in the first place.

id rather pay ?20 to see blood for blood in a small venue full of real HC people than pay the same to see stadium "punks" (ha ha!) like good fucking charlotte with a couple of thousand pre-pubescent tossers, skateboards under arms and mum and dad picking them up after the show.

im not saying that bands shouldnt do well and pull big crowds, if they have worked for it and are not just a record company produced fashion show.

SOIA, Dropkick Murphys etc. deserve every penny they get.

Fucking MTV has a lot to answer for.

I agree completely. I do all sorts of shows here in LA, and getting enough people to show up just to cover cost is hard as hell. People complain all day and night about how much music sucks, and how much MTV sucks... so where are all these kids? Certainly not going to local shows. Unless you consider Atreyu and Bleeding Through playing their hometown a "local show"

This shit runs in cycles. I've seen it happen so many times. A certain type of music bordering on something good gets big and then all these MTV sheep start crowding out the shows and then the real kids don't wanna put up with them and they disappear, before too long the sheep kids fade back out into whatever is new and then nobody's around. Slowly the real kids start coming back, but it happens all the time. That shit sucks...

I don't think you understand what I'm saying. I'm talking about the scene, not the bands and I would never say that Limp Dicklet has ever had anything to do with the underground ANYTHING.

I am not a fan of the band either, but that doesnt change the fact that they released records without any record label backing. They sold quite a few records without any record label backing as well, which, like it or not, means they did have "underground" fans. I dont agree with how they handled their popularity, and I hope that other bands that make "non-mtv" music dont ruin everything, I am pretty confident that Hatebreed will handle it ok, but with them opening the general publics eyes to hardcore, or metal, a lot of other bands are going to be given the chance to ruin the good name of hardcore and metal.

Being on an independent label or even self releasing records, while being very difficult, does not make a band or their following "underground". It simply indicates that there was no big label interested in the band. And how do you figure that one of MTV's posterboy bands (outside of rap, of course) is "non-mtv music"? Last I heard the main Limp boy is MTV's lapdog. And just to further bolster my Asshole status, I really don't see much difference between Hatebreed and Limp Bizkit, but what do I know, I don't like metal bands that claim to be hardcore.

big labels arent interested in hardcore because i guess its a relatively low profit area to them. most of us guys here just dont have the money to buy the cd,dvd,t shirt, hoody, cap, fucking cofee mug coaster etc that those cunts would want us to buy.
hardcore is better off with labels like thorp who put the bands out because they have a love and understanding for the music and scene.
i dont know what "underground" really stands for anymore,
i guess an early example would be the likes of crass with thier corpus christi label or conflict with mortarhate, who both put out releases by bands who were just too hot for the industry to handle.
its a shame really, cos a lot of kids probably think stuff like slipknot, wank 182 etc are underground and therefore cool, which they are most definately not, and the big labels are laughing all the way to the bank, whilst continuing to fuel those kids misconception.
