i can buy a 15 acre farm with a house, multiple barns and lake frontage in upstate new york for under $175,000. you can't buy anything other than a kick in the pants for that much in brooklyn.

$400,000 will get you a nice one bedroom in my neighborhood. ...or 130 acres with a private 40 acre lake. damn.

I did alot of driving around certain parts of Upstate NY this summer, and if I didnt mind giving up neighbors or civilization I could definitely live up there. Everything was so beautiful and quiet. The air actually smelled fresh and nobody is really gonna bother you about anything. I can have a yard to toss the football around on or have an outdoor party. I'd definitely miss having neighbors though... even if I dont really talk to the ones around me now. I think I'd get kinda lonely.

$400,000 up here gets you little more than a 30 year old, 3-4 bedroom ranch style home in a decent neighborhood, on about a half acre. Not as bad a Brooklyn, but still ridiculous considering the local wages don't match up. People moving up from the city and Westchester have totally screwed up our market.

i'd love to have a place out in the distant woods like that. i think fear of scarring my kids is the primary reason why i wouldn't move there full time, though.
