unwinding frayed nerves

Voodoobillyman - 11-11-2005 at 07:03 PM

okay, so some if not all on here are sometimes uptight with certain things going on around them. Be it debt (mentioned in another thread) relationships, traffic, trends...you get the idea. The question is, what do you like to do to unwind? When the nerves have been spun so to speak, what regrounds you and allows you to think clearly once again?
I like to make my daughter laugh, it in turn makes me laugh, I also like to cook, and if I'm feeling up to it, running seems to get things flowing in the right direction. The not so healthy but fun and relaxing nonetheless ways are beer and spirits and going to a good show and cutting loose on the dance floor. Sorry this is so long.

I'm reading "Genome" now by Matt Ridley and enjoying it quite a bit, basically a breakdown in layman's terms of how genetics shape us. I've been reading alot of Richard Dawkins lately, more on genetics/biology but written in a way that I find at least as engaging as good fiction, "River out of Eden" is probably as good a book as any to start with by him. "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman" is another great book that combines scientific themes with a real human element. "The Man who Mistook his Wife for a Hat" and "An Anthropologist on Mars" both by Oliver Sacks are interesting books on neurological disorders that make for good reads, they give you an appreciation of just how unbelievably complicated the brain is- the stories would make for great dystopic science fiction, the fact that they're true makes them all the more incredible.
I just finished Noam Chomsky's "Imperial Ambitions"- it's a great read but anything but calming or relaxing (which was the original spirit of this thread), but an essential read all the same. For fiction/literature Steinbeck has to be one of my all time favourites, "Cannery Row" and "Of Mice and Men" are great reads, "East of Eden" is easily one of the best novels ever written (even if it was an Oprah book club pick, anyone catch Brian ripping Stewie about it on Family Guy?). Brendan Behan wrote some great books in a drunken narrative kind of style.

"unwinding frayed nerves"

I drank beers last night. That was fun. I woke up early this morning from the sound of people yelling at each other. I still feel drunk, my eyes are hurting from the sun. I need to go back to bed.

what a night, sailor jerry rum is a great friedn indeed. Big D, I did make the transition pretty quickly, I was already toasty when I started posting and it just went downhill from there. I needed it though. Now I wont need to tie one on for at least a good month or two.

My wife and I are looking at heavy bags, we want to put one in the garage, that would be an awesome tension reliever.

I always enjoy sitting back with something by Tom Clancy, Robert Ludlum, Jonathon Kellerman, etc. Sometimes a good biography, a book on an interesting period in history, really anything I'm in the mood for at the time.
