Are roadies just another form of groupies?

RomanticViolence - 11-15-2005 at 02:01 PM

Just wondering.

As a 'roadie' I can understand why someone would make the comparison. Alot of times the roadies are the guys that dont know how to play an instrument and they just cling to the band because they wish they could play too.

For some people its actually how they make a living. I mean Metallica has their roadcrew on sallary year round so IF they decide to do something the road crew is ready to go. The more indie version of this would be people who go from tour to tour with differant bands. I know someone who does this, but as a merch guy. Hes toured with tons of bands and thats his job.

For me it was the chance to travel and see lots of places that I probably never would have seen & because I'm a super geek for the band I got to tour with. I definitly worked my ass off, but I got to see lots of places, meet lots of people and see awesome bands for 10-25 nights in a row! Plus when it was all said and done, I got paid!! You cant go wrong with a deal like that!

yes and no
I did professional backline set ups for a lot of shows in austin including(name drop, name drop, name drop), and we worked our asses off...show up at noon set up till 5, watch the show and tear down till 3 am...
repeat ...
there were some hacks who would work just the shows for bands they wanted to see, i.e. groupies... but there were a lot of people busting ass everyday and were good at what they did....

now people who tour with the buddies to pretend to carry shit and just get the guys in bands drugs and girls...
yeah groupies

I enjoyed helping my buddy set up and tune his drums, it was cool to get in for sound checks and the likes, free beer too. Never did claim to be a roadie though so that must be why I never got in on the girl action. I did have alot of fun doing that stuff. The only thing I ever made money off doing that kind of thing was artwork for album covers, flyers and merch. That was alot of fun too.
