with all this talk about recommending bands on here lately we could do something with it? all of the regular posters (i.e. over a certain small amount
of posts to avoid the spammers) could upload an mp3 of a song they're really into at the moment (not their own band, again...spammers), hosted
somewhere private (ala bad vibes thingy) then we could each make a thorp board recommended mixed CD and give all this stuff a chance simply by
downloading all the stuff on the page. we all have pretty varied tastes so i'm sure everyone would at least find one gem in the bunch. hell it would
be cool to do one a month. it would give lazy slackasses like myself an easier option than checking out tons of websites to hear all theses bands. all
in one place = easy. at the end of the month all the files are gone and we start over. what do you guys think?
RomanticViolence - 11-17-2005 at 04:13 PM
I think thats a great idea!
BDx13 - 11-17-2005 at 05:14 PM
we kinda started this idea before, didn't we? when everyone suggested a track for a comp? anyway, there are a few ways to do this, but technically,
none of them are legal. you send it is oen idea, but because we're talking about multiple individuals contributing to a group project, that'd require
a lot of back and forth.
the first and probably easiest way to do it would be something like yahoo briefcase. all you need is a yahoo account, you can store up to 30 MB at a
time for free (5MB/file max), and you can restrict who can access the files. it's not a lot of space, but upgrading is reasonably priced.
other options include private file sharing networks (which basically work like other P2P clients, but only registered users can even get on the
network, let alone see or download your files) or having someone (like me) setting up a password-protected, web-based file upload system. either of
these would have far fewer restrictions than yahoo and could be fully encripted (to protect the identities of the members), but would require more
work up front.

I love that idea!!!!!!!!!! I dont know how to do any of that computer mumbo jumbo ,though, I could figure it out with a little help.
Discipline - 11-17-2005 at 05:18 PM
Kickass idea.
newbreedbrian - 11-17-2005 at 06:04 PM
i like your last option the best duane, but obviously i don't expect to just drop a bunch of work down for you. i'd do it if i knew anything about
computers. i thought about the legal issue, which is why i suggested some form of private hosting with only our little group of contributers having
access which should take care of that problem. the idea is similar to the previous idea (which was dave's i think) except you don't have to go
searching for the songs and it's not genre defined. i would never go searching for a "new hardcore" set of mp3s, time consuming and i hate most new
hardcore. but i might find something i like, especially if it stands out enough for someone to upload it as their one song. and it's really easy to
make an mp3 from a cd you have, anyone here can do that easy. it's really like someone making you a mixed tape, except it's a bunch of people making
it all coming from a different perspective, albeit a better one than most of the mainstream population. and i think overall people on this board have
better taste than most people.
BDx13 - 11-17-2005 at 06:21 PM
the other benefit to yahoo is that, despite the size restrictions, it's free. would you be up for paying a few bucks a year? then something like http://www.xdrive.com or http://www.streamload.com or http://www.ibackup.com would be good.
what about membership requirements? number of posts? most 'regulars' have a 200 or 300 posts. invitation only? ha! i think it's just as important
to be contributing regularly as well.
thoughts?
newbreedbrian - 11-17-2005 at 06:39 PM
i'd be willing to throw a few dollars in on that for sure. we could set up a paypal fund for the cost. membership requirements is a difficult one. i
don't want to exclude the newer people around here who are regulars but i think the minimum post idea is good. and i want this to really represent the
neighborhood thorp bar regulars. also, i think one song per person is a good idea. it really makes you think about your choice, and you get another
chance next month.
Discipline - 11-17-2005 at 08:15 PM
I'd chip in fer that.
tireironsaint - 11-17-2005 at 09:16 PM
This sounds like a great idea to me. Might be a lot of work for you, Duane, but if you're down with it then I think we'd all love you even more than
we already do. If that's even possible.....
clevohardcore - 11-17-2005 at 10:49 PM
great idea.
moforn - 11-18-2005 at 02:13 AM
bump for a good idea, and to get closer to the required post count.
thedog - 11-18-2005 at 03:26 AM
great idea,
dont know if i qualify though.... i am pretty quiet on here sometimes.
CR83 - 11-18-2005 at 12:01 PM
Great idea (shared network). Whatever I can do to help.
brooklyn - 11-19-2005 at 04:50 AM
like the idea and willing to drop in a few $
Dave - 11-19-2005 at 10:27 AM
I think it's a good idea as well, i'd chip in some towards that too.
(only if Lionel doesn't get to participate.
)
Dave - 11-19-2005 at 11:15 AM
we'll we can test this out this way, for one month i'll host an FTP server, and we'll use it as a testing grounds. for people to upload one song
each, and then download the songs as well. this will require everyone knowing how to use a ftp, (which is easy)., it's been awhile since i've run one
so if it doesn't work, be patience, and i'll fix it, i run my cpu 24 hours a day. i'm putting a max of 5 users at once, so save my bandwidth alittle.
upload anything except music, in MP3 format, and i'll ban you.
i'm also going to restrict it to the thorp family that has atleast 100 posts. and also don't give out the server information to anyone.
U2U me for your own personal login information.
How's this sound to everyone?
Also, i'm not sure if this is 'legal' or not, but it should be, if it isn't let me know. (Duane let me know!)
upyerbum - 11-19-2005 at 11:35 AM
Ive got 116 posts as Jeff the Greek, Do I get to post those? Remember we live in the same town Dave.
Dave - 11-19-2005 at 01:24 PM
sure Jeff
soon as i hear from Duane on yes or no, it's a go!
then start the U2U's
newbreedbrian - 11-19-2005 at 01:25 PM
dave that sounds ok with some detailed instructions on how to do it for us non computer folk. the ones duane mentioned are really cheap and maybe
easier for most people, so if enough people are willing to chuck in literally a couple dollars each we could make that happen as well in the future.
i'd be willing to give a shot to settin that up if duane assures me it's not too difficult.
Dave - 11-19-2005 at 01:48 PM
i checked out one of the sites, and it's only 10$ a month for like 5 gig's or something, so $120 a year. not bad really it would only be like a
couple dollars from everyone.
newbreedbrian - 11-19-2005 at 03:08 PM
yea thats the one i was looking at
Dave - 11-19-2005 at 03:25 PM
let's do it........
BDx13 - 11-20-2005 at 04:33 PM
lemme catch up on some shit, and i'll chime back in on this monday.
