Thorp and Sailor's Grave Board

Long live the King (Kong, that is)

Just got home from seeing King Kong and I'm blown away! Think Lord Of The Rings minus all the fruity stuff. Three hours went by like five fuckin' minutes. I am so buying this as soon as it's available. Let's see...to be a bit objective, there were a few times where the CGI was a let down. A couple of times where Kong is holding Ann it really doesn't look right and there's a couple of times where people are hanging on to things or whatever and they look like dolls, but that's really all I can come up with negative about this. As I've said before, King Kong had a huge effect on me as a kid and it was the very first horror-type movie I ever saw on the big screen so needless to say, I was a little worried about being let down by a remake. Fuck all that, the two previous versions of King Kong are nothing compared to this. I don't know how many of you remember the old 70s cartoon movie of The Hobbit, but if you do, think of the new Kong as the Lord Of The Rings movies and the old Kong as that old cartoon Hobbit. Seriously, Jackson has outdone himself this time. He definitely made the right decision of sticking to the original period for this, it's set in the 20s and it works perfectly. All of the characters are developed to waaaaay beyond anything from the first two versions. The film maker (Jack Black's character) isn't just a greedy scumbag like he was before. He's actually three dimensional and his motivations make sense. I was skeptical about Jack Black playing this kind of role since all I knew of him was his goofy, over the top comedy image, but he was really, really good. Naomi Watts was also excellent and the chemistry between her and Kong was amazing. You actually really believe in Kong and he doesn't come across as a big special effect (even with the CGI issues I mentioned) and they really draw you into his character. He comes across like a giant kid sometimes and they got rid of the weird sexual undertone to Kong's relationship with Ann which makes this version seem a lot more natural.

Anyway, go see it and tell me what you think. Granted, if you disagree with me, I'm gonna think you're a fuckin' retard, but oh well, right?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that there's a special little nod to one of Peter Jackson's old movies in there if you are paying attention. There's a scene with a bunch of animal cages and one is labeled "Sumatran Rat Monkey".....

I think Peter Jackson is brilliant and everything he has done is awesome, so I will go see it on that alone.

Meh, I thought he was a weird choice for the role before I saw it and I kept imagining him acting like the goofy motherfucker he usually is, but he did a great job. If he's the only reason you might skip this, don't let that keep you away. He's really NOTHING like he normally is in this movie.
