It wasnt the romans...
The jews went to the romans saying that they believed jesus to be a heritic.
The romans said they wanted nothing to do with it. So Pontious Pilot sent the jews to the herrod ( i think) and herrod said that jesus was nothing but
a fruad, didnt commit any crimes, and sent the jews and jesus away.
So the jews... going nuts, decide to go back to the romans and ask them to prosecute jesus for breaking some kind of lame jew law.
Pilot asks for a bowl of water, washes his hands of what was about to be done, and sends jesus off to be whipped and crucified.
Oh, and the romans actually offered the jews another chance to let jesus go. They offered a choice, between Barabas, and thief and murderer, and
jesus. Guess which the jews picked.

Actually I just think it's hilarious. I don't find it offensive in the least being that I'm an atheist. I just know that some people go off because
of that kind of shit.
