It's a rare time when I'll find myself watching CMT(Country Music Television), but right now they're playing the Willie Nelson 60 minutes interview
and up after that is a Johnny Cash 60 minutes interview. That's the kind of stuff my Dad had me growing up to. A kid being a kid, I rejected all the
country and bluegrass stuff that my parents were into... but I find that more and more I'm appreciating that stuff.
Today I picked up this Cash comp called "The Legend of Johnny Cash" at Whole Foods Market of all places... he was just so damn great... Good break
from all the hc and oi I've been spinning lately.

my dad listened to willie nelson when i was a young kid, and i hated all that stuff. somehow now, i see a connection between some country music and
punk. for christmas this year i received 2 cash cd box sets (the one called Legend with 4 discs, and one is a 3 disc set with the discs named murder,
love, and god)and a copy of his book.
unfortunatley, allot of the country music i see on cmt when its not something like you just described turns my stomach. like the shit they would play
in a pick up truck commercial. my girlfriend and i frequent this one steakhouse style restaurant, which is real good, and the theme of things is Texas
and such. but they play the most god awlful country shit in there. crap like that song save a horse ride a cowboy and she thinks my tractor's sexy. it
just makes white people look stupid. there i said it. point all negative remarks towards diablo now.
i like me some country though
cash
hank williams (i really dont dig jr though)
merle
outlaw kinda stuff.
perhaps some of you can reccommend me some
i know mrbadvibes has a prety wide range of stuff that he is hip to...so send it here...
and for the record, Cash's book is not bad at all. some interesting stuff in there...

i hated country when i was a kid. hated it. cash was the first country i got into. from there merle haggard, buck owens, hank williams, bob wills,
george jones, ray price, kitty wells, jean shepard, merle travis, carter family, etc. from there i got really into bluegrass the last few years. cmt
and all that pop country shit is a garbage pile. there's still good stuff out there (wayne hancock, fred eaglesmith) but you're not likely to hear it
on the radio or cmt.

Yeah, I hate that Toby Keith type shit... which my little brother and parents are into... but I love the classic stuff. Growing up my Dad was also in
a country band with his brother and some folks that he grew up with. My first shows tended to be in places where folks would smoke and drink and I was
just a little guy watching my Dad and uncle play their guitars on stage. My parents have some great pics of me with toy guitars, cowboy boots and
hats.... damn.
When I was like 12 or 13 we went to Kentucky to visit my Mom's aunts and my Dad had to go to the log cabin where Loretta Lynn grew up. I wasn't
thrilled.
My Dad and uncle play bluegrass now. Banjo, fiddle, mandolin... those are their instruments.

right on. i play mandolin as well

I began to appreciate bluegrass more after I really started getting into traditional Irish tunes. Alot of similarity there.

yea bg is a real melting pot of styles. irish/scottish fiddle tunes, gospel singing, rural folk music, blues, jazz. it gets more interesting the more
you get into it. the tempos can get just crazy, them cats can flat out play.

Definitely, it sucks that people have this back asswards perception of it as like.... inbred hick music. It's so amazingly creative, and crosses
racial lines alot. I think that's what's truly amazing about Southern and Apalachian music... it's more integrated than alot of stuff out there.
newbreedbrian - 3-7-2006 at 02:14 AM
indeed. bill monroe always credited arnold schultz, a blues player from his area, with being his biggest influence.

For you Bluegrass fans, check out the Hackensaw boys and split lip rayfield. Both bands I saw with the Reverend Horton heat, and both talented as all
hell. The Rev has a soft spot for BG.
